Summary Description
The Center on Global Energy Policy ( CGEP ) at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs ( SIPA ) seeks a Senior Research Scholar to serve as its first Research Director. The Senior Research Scholar /Research Director will be a key part of the Center's leadership team, working with the Center's Director to oversee the Center's research effort - one that spans the economic, environmental and geopolitical aspects of the current and future energy system. This position will report to the Center's Director.
Key responsibilities:
The Senior Research Scholar/Research Director will be responsible for critical functions on behalf of the Center. These include the following:
- Developing research collaborations across Columbia University and with outside academic organizations:
The Senior Research Scholar/Research Director will work closely with the Chair of CGEP's Faculty Steering Committee to spearhead research collaboratives across Columbia including, but not limited to, the Earth Institute, the Law School, the Business School, and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. The successful candidate will have spent time in senior academic research or management roles, but would also have substantial experience in the policy world or other practice-oriented roles. He or she will help be a bridge between the Center's research scholars and the faculty across the university, developing collaborative research projects, managing the research review process, developing post-doctoral programs, and supervising and incorporating Ph.D. students into the Center's work. The incumbent will be responsible for the same types of collaboration with outside academic partners as well.
- Setting standards of the highest quality academic research:
The Senior Research Scholar/Research Director will also play a quality control function for the organization. Specifically, this individual will ensure that the work from contributors with vastly different backgrounds adheres to the standards of the highest quality academic research. The incumbent will advance CGEP's already strong existing processes, guide research scholars in development of paper proposals, and read all papers before they are published. He or she will also manage the internal and external expert review processes and will review all reviewer comments and responses to them to ensure that they are adequately addressed by the author(s) prior to publication.
- Providing mentorship and coaching to individual scholars and research programs:
The Senior Research Scholar/Research Director will also act as a mentor for CGEP scholars, some of whom are bringing practical experience and expertise to an academic environment for the first time. This will include coaching, guidance, goal and expectation setting, and project reviews. The Senior Research Scholar/Research Director will also work closely with the Center's Director on annual performance reviews of research scholars and oversee the major review process for part-time scholars ( SIPA runs the major review process for full-time scholars). Additionally, the incumbent will provide intellectual leadership and management to the Center's existing and future research programs.
- Generating his/her own original research:
The incumbent will generate his/her own original research, in a field relevant to CGEP , in the form of reports, commentaries, journal articles, op-eds and other products.
Minimum Degree Required
Master's degree in energy, economics, public policy, foreign policy, international affairs, or national security.
Minimum Qualifications
? At least 8-10 years post-degree related work experience.
? Extensive knowledge of energy economics, international relations, climate change, public policy, and related issues as demonstrated through both prior professional experience and academic preparation.
? A proven record of successful engagement at senior levels and the ability to achieve consensus and interact effectively with multiple high-level stakeholders.
? Strong communication skills and an ability to build support amongst partners for better policies, on the basis of evidence-based analysis.
? Proven track record of written research.
Preferred Qualifications
? PhD in energy, economics, public policy, foreign policy, international affairs, or national security preferred.
