Vice President - Biology


About the Role:


We are looking for an exceptional scientist to help define and bring about the future of 10x Genomics. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leadership and technological innovation as well as a drive to solve the hardest problems in biology. This person will need to grow, inspire and lead our exceptional teams across molecular biology, protein engineering, cell and tissue biology, and applications. They will need to have a strong sense of where the biggest emerging biological applications are, and the ability to develop technology strategies to address these applications. This person needs to be passionate about building products that work in labs across the world. This position will interact closely with senior leadership at our Pleasanton HQ, as well as our global R&D and commercial organization.


What you will be doing:

  • Lead multiple R&D teams working on technology and product development across broad areas of molecular and cellular biology
  • Work with these teams to define and execute technology strategies in each of these areas
  • Hire, manage, inspire and develop the best scientists and leaders across each of these areas
  • Champion innovation and provide mentorship and guidance to employees
  • Provide technical guidance and feedback across projects
  • Work closely with leaders in other R&D groups (including Chemistry, Hardware Engineering, Computational Biology, and Software Engineering) to develop processes for product and technology development as the company and product portfolio grows
  • Establish and maintain the necessary team structures, processes, infrastructure and environment to drive development of 10x Genomics' technology platforms
  • Help assess external scientific and technological developments and their impact on 10x
  • Build and maintain close relationships with external scientific communities
  • Develop and manage the resourcing and budget plans across multiple projects and efforts


To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • PhD and proven, significant depth of experience in molecular biology, cellular biology, biotechnology, genomics, or a similar field as evidenced by a strong publication record
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) managing teams of scientists from a variety of backgrounds
  • A strong passion for building gameā€changing technologies that can significantly impact the world of life science research
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced and quickly changing environment
