We are looking for an Ecologist to support installation and operation of the Detection and Active Response Curtailment (DARC) bat curtailment system including site specific system design, system monitoring, data analysis, report writing, and system enhancements and improvements. Through this role, you will work with the Wildlife Technology group and other technical groups within Natural Power on a diverse range of interesting and challenging projects using state-of-the-art tools and methodologies to develop innovative technology-based solutions for our renewable energy clients. If you are degree qualified in an ecological science/scientific discipline with a particular focus on wildlife and previous experience in a similar role, our Ecologist position could be just the role for you.

This role can be based in any of our US offices.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Support Natural Power DARC system designs, installations, and operations
  • Design, implement, and manage pre and post construction bat acoustic studies
  • Analyze bat call data to determine presence or absence of bats, and in some cases to identify calls by species
  • Complete statistical analysis on data
  • Prepare reports on bat call data and associated turbine curtailment
  • Assist in scoping and preparation of proposals
  • Work with Advisory and Analytics Team tasks related to Energy Calculation

Education and Qualifications

  •  Degree qualified (MS) in an ecological sciences or other scientific discipline with a particular focus on wildlife, wildlife management, ecology, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent communication skills, being able to convey clear and concise information in both written and verbal format 
  • Experience in the following areas would be a distinct advantage: federal and state regulatory processing around the Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, etc.
  • Statistical analysis
  • Experience in renewable energy projects
  • R statistical programming language
  • Extensive previous experience working for an environmental or renewable energy consultancy
  • Experience with bat call analysis software and classification
  • Experience with Wildlife detection sensors (tag sensors such as VHF and GPS telemetry, acoustic sensors both audible and ultrasound, visual sensors such as visible, IR and thermal spectrum cameras)
  • Ability to pass client-mandated background checks to allow access to electrical grid and communications infrastructure
  • Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including turbine climbing and working on top of a wind turbine nacelle (>250 feet above ground level). Must be able to secure and maintain the requisite tower climbing certification such as the entry level courses offered by ENSA. http://www.ensanorthamerica.com/courses/windenergy-training-courses/.
  • Ability to travel periodically (estimated 10%-20%) to remote client sites throughout the US and Canada to complete system installations or to troubleshoot/repair systems
