* Duties Help Duties Summary The Vegetable Crops Research Unit (VCRU) in Madison, Wisconsin conducts fundamental and applied research on the genetics, physiology, molecular biology, disease resistance and breeding strategies of vegetable crops and cranberries. The incumbent develops novel strategies for improving cranberry production and crop utilization, tools for evaluating and broadening the knowledge base of cranberry focusing on characterizing fruit composition and fruit quality, and new value-added products. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities * Develop new processes that result in cranberry-based products with improved functional, nutritional and economic value. * Determine innovative processing parameters and conditions to produce novel cranberry-based foods, beverages and snacks. * Develop pre- and post-processing technologies that improve product acceptability and nutritional value. * Identify, concentrate and preserve natural phytonutrients and develop value-added cranberry-based products containing these components. * Develop, improve and/or apply sensory and analytical techniques to accurately and rapidly assess important cranberry fruit quality attributes that may contribute to the development of innovative food products. Travel Required Occasional travel - Local, domestic, and international travel is required for field/farm work and to attend training and scientific meetings and conferences. Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled in any of the job series/position titles listed. In addition to the specialized experience requirements, applicants must submit proof that they meet the educational requirements for at least one of the series described in the announcement. Applicants may only be appointed to job series/position titles for which they meet all experience and educational requirements. Basic Requirements: Chemistry Series, 1320 A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Food Technology Series, 1382 A. Degree: food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science. The course work must have been comprised of at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and physical sciences and included at least 20 semester hours in food technology and closely related subjects, or 20 semester hours in subjects that can be applied directly to food technology. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, including the course work specified, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic requirements for one of the series described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below. GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e. biotechnology, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, botany, plant sciences/biology, horticulture, plant physiology, food science, or food technology) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. * Conducting research related to improving crop quality attributes, including visual appearance, texture, flavor and taste; AND * Utilizing molecular, biotechnological, biochemical, or genetic methods and techniques to characterize underlying crop development, metabolism, pre/postharvest biology, composition and processing quality, or marketability impacts on final fresh and processed products, evaluate post-harvest crop responses to environmental and storage conditions, or increase the quality or safety of food products; AND * Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to plant science, molecular biology, crop production, horticultural science, biochemistry, chemistry, food science/technology or crop product utilization. GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service. * Planning and conducting independent research related to improving crop quality attributes, including visual appearance, texture, flavor and taste; AND * Applying multiple molecular, biotechnological, biochemical, chemical or genetic methods and techniques to characterize underlying crop development, metabolism, pre/postharvest biology, composition and processing quality, or marketability impacts on final fresh and processed products, evaluate post-harvest crop responses to environmental and storage conditions or increase the quality or safety of food products; AND * Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to plant science, molecular biology, crop production, horticultural science, food science/technology or crop product utilization.
