What You Will Do
As part of the Waste Management Programs Group supporting Los Alamos National Laboratory's waste management regulatory compliance and reporting operations, you will work as an Environmental Professional. The Waste Compliance and Reporting team provides oversight for compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) Order 435.1 Radioactive Waste Management and Laboratory Waste Management policy. The organization provides waste management compliance support and oversight of waste characterization, staging, storing, shipping and disposal activities and conducts facility-specific container inventories against the institutional waste operating record in the laboratory's Waste Compliance and Tracking System. You will work closely with other members of the team providing customer support to facility managers, Waste Management Coordinators, internal/external stakeholders, and waste generators. You will assist in preparing deliverables and commitments to the Environmental Protection Agency, New Mexico Environment Department, Department of Energy, and Department of Transportation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Reporting to the Team Leader, your day-to-day work will include understanding and communicating regulations to customers pertaining to radioactive waste management, reviewing waste data, preparing waste data reports and metrics, and communicating and interacting with customers across organizations. You will serve as the lead for the DOE O 435.1 Exemption process to ship waste to non-DOE commercial facilities, facilitating waste Subject Matter Expert reviews, working with Waste Management to include waste volume and specifications in the Exemption, and prepare correspondence for internal review and approval to DOE.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Proven knowledge and experience with waste management (e.g., DOE O 435.1 Radioactive Waste Management) and hazardous wastes (e.g., Resource Conservation and Recovery Act).
- Experience handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes.
- Experience in preparing professional regulatory documents and/or procedures.
- Experience understanding and interpreting waste data using systems to manage waste cradle-to-grave and ability to generate data to be presented in reports.
- Proven success with teamwork, customer service, consultation and communication to implement sound environmental practices.
Desired Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of waste-related field, facility operations including shipping activities.
- Experience conducting waste inspections and/or waste inventories at nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.
- Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting environmental protection.
- Experience and proficiency using EXCEL data spreadsheets and tables.
Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and five years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Location: This position will be part of the Laboratory's Telework Pilot and may work from a remote/home location within a two-hour ground commute of the Laboratory. The Telework Pilot is in effect from Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021, but may be shortened or extended at the manager's discretion. Ability to report on-site is a must for this position.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements
- for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
