The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate I position in the Coral Reef Fish Ecology team located in Miami, Florida.

Department Specific Functions:
  • The successful applicant will be participate in field research on reef fish and benthic ecology, primarily in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The incumbent will primarily support the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program's (CRCP) National Coral Reef Conservation Plan. SEFSC is co-lead for biological components of this program in the U.S. Atlantic and Caribbean, which includes monitoring fish and benthic communities for all US territories in the region.
  • Duties include participating in field research, including preparation, maintenance, and breakdown of supplies/gear and coordination with PI, NCRMP staff, and divers as needed. As well as data entry, proofing, and editing data for database submission.
  • The candidate will be involved in various product production in partnership with NOAA advisor. Products may include education and outreach materials as well as written reports.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, fisheries science, social science, or a related field.
  • The applicant must possess a SCUBA certification and have experience as a scientific diver. Nitrox and advanced certifications are preferred (dives up to 100ft). The individual must have a 1) a current AAUS affiliation; 2) a current Agency affiliation (state or federal); or 3) have a recent (AAUS or agency) affiliation and/or the ability to pass a rigorous dive physical, possess a rescue diver certification and have over 100 logged dives.
  • The incumbent must be comfortable working from small boats while at sea and familiar with small boat operations. Larger liveaboard dive vessel experience is helpful but not required.
  • Experience surveying/identifying reef fish species and/or sessile benthic organisms in Florida/Caribbean is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity or experience with NCRMP (or other SCUBA-based fish sampling program) based protocols is preferred.
  • Incumbent should have current First Aid, CPR, and O2 Administration certifications or be able to obtain them prior to employment.
  • Incumbent should have experience with data entry, hand-held GPS, and boat mounted GPS.
  • That incumbent should possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with written reports and/or education and outreach materials is desired but not required.
