Why Patients Need You
Environmental Engineer will provide environmental engineering technical support and expertise for site activities (Research, Development (clinical GMP) and Commercial Manufacturing, Laboratory, Central Energy Plant and additional Facility activities) with a demonstrated ability to function independently and productively. Engineering services include technical calculations, regulatory interpretation and permit/report submittals for environmental compliance activities associated with but not limited to air pollution control, wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management, chemical or biological (secondary) containment requirements, wetlands delineation and compliance, and conservation commission by-laws.

You will be part of a dynamic team of experts who form Pfizer's Environment, Health & Safety division. Due to the importance of this team for Pfizer's employees and patients, the organization relies heavily on its team members' timely actions and decision-making ability.

You will be responsible for activities related to interpreting, recommending and compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations/company policies. You will also assist in planning the changes in physical facilities to meet new environmental requirements. You will support the team in preparing contracts for licensed hazardous waste disposal firms, monitoring waste handling and organizing spill-control teams. Your knowledge base will help you in updating environmental and spill-control manuals and procedures.

As a Senior Associate, your ability to meet team targets will help in completing important deliverables on time. Your innovative use of communication tools and techniques will make it easy to manage difficult issues and help in establishing consensus between teams.

How You Will Achieve It
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills - be a strong advocate for employee and facility safety and environmental compliance, have a focus on customer satisfaction, assist with the continuous improvement of operating systems, identify cost reduction opportunities (pollution prevention, waste reduction) and participate in site Sustainability teams (Steering & Culture).
  • Ability to develop and maintain site specific environmental standards, metrics and compliance management systems.
  • Develop and provides trainings for environmental compliance - spill response, oil management, ozone depleting substances/refrigerant handling, hazardous, solid & universal waste management and integrated contingency plans.
  • Provide environmental expertise with respect to incident and accident investigations - assist with determining environmental compliance issues, root cause analysis and development of corrective actions/hazard and risk reduction.
  • Provide environmental compliance guidance for engineering and construction projects - technical calculations for effluent/emissions (air and wastewater impact assessments), permit and license development, waste management guidance (chemical, biological and solid) and secondary containment reviews. Participates in operational-readiness reviews for new equipment and operations.
  • Assists in the completion and submittal of all environmental compliance reports - wastewater, above-ground storage tanks, biennial hazardous waste reports, TUR reports, Tier II, integrated contingency plans, EPA and DEP air compliance, flammable storage permits and controlled substances. Maintains legal tracking register for environmental compliance submittals.
  • Assists in the management of site chemical inventories in order to maintain compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Participates in regulatory agency inspections.
  • Provides guidance for the proper disposal (waste management/wastewater) of the raw materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients involved in the clinical and commercial manufacturing operations. An active participant in the Technology Transfer team.
  • Supervises the hazardous materials spill response team - responds to spills, conducts training and periodic drills and ensures membership is maintained at appropriate levels across all operating shifts.
  • Successfully completes training required to perform job assignments and to maintain required job-related professional certifications. Seeks out additional training and experiences to enhance skills and abilities for program compliance and improvements.
  • Proactively identifies internal and external trends in environmental subject and assesses site risk relative to trends. Consults with Global EHS on best practices and benchmarks with other Pfizer sites and external sources


Qualifications

Must-Have
  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline (environmental or chemical engineering preferred)
  • 5+ years of demonstrated EHS experience
  • Position requires technical knowledge in relevant environmental compliance areas including hazardous waste, wastewater, and air emission discharges.
  • Demonstrated experience related to Environment, Health & Safety
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, creativity in problem solving, flexibility, and excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of computer operation and experience with MS Office, especially Word, Excel, Outlook


Nice-to-Have
  • Master's degree
  • Significant experience in the bio-pharmaceutical industry
  • Experience applying Department of Transportation and International Air Transport Association (IATA) Hazardous Materials shipping regulations
  • Professional certification


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to perform field observations which could involve walking or standing on uneven terrain, squatting, bending, twisting, turning, and reaching above shoulder height and work in various climates from extreme cold to heat.
  • Must be able to work in GMP manufacturing suite clean room environment.
  • May require walking, standing, and or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to walk and drive between site facilities.


NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbent will be required to respond to emergencies, both by phone and in person as necessary, at any time.
  • Requires being on call 24/7.
  • Must be willing and able to work multiple shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and other times with minimal notice.
  • Occasional travel to local and national conferences and Pfizer sites.
