The position is based in Austin, Texas, and is part of the Sample Preparation R&D team within the Biosciences Division (BID). This business focuses on automating sample preparation for researchers and scientists and simplifying and optimizing the purification process for clinical samples. The Sample Prep business includes Invitrogen Sample Prep reagents, the KingFisher™ platform and associated products, and the Invitrogen Dynabeads portfolio, including original equipment manufacturer (OEM) beads and catalog products?.
How will you make an impact?
As a Scientist III, you will be supporting and promoting the Thermo Fisher Scientific portfolio of reagents, kits, and instruments for nucleic acid purification. Using strong experimental skills and a broad understanding of molecular biology technology, you will perform Research Use Only (RUO) product development from concept to launch. With over $1 billion invested annually in R&D, the candidate will help solve some of the world's toughest challenges. We empower our teams to put science into meaningful action and give our R&D colleagues the autonomy, resources, and tools they need to take science a step beyond.
What will you do?
- Apply technical knowledge to develop kits/reagents/instruments/workflows for sample collection and nucleic acid purification from various biological sample types.
- Execute various R&D activities through different phases of product development, including product QC method development and manufacturing transfer.
- Develop a hypothesis and then design, plan, and execute the required set of experiments to test the hypothesis with limited mentorship.
- Perform data analysis, interpretation, and summarization to help guide product development.
- Work in close collaboration with cross functional teams including System Engineer, Product Manager, Marketing, and Manufacturing to deliver high quality results.
- Maintain accurate and detailed lab notebooks and appropriate documentation based on the scientific method enabling other scientists to reproduce your experiments.
- Present research data and conclusions in 10-30 minute sessions.
- Assist in preparing material for manuals, scientific publications, marketing, or patents.
- Assist in contacting customers to coordinate and conduct interviews about lab practices.
How will you get here?
Education
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field preferred
Experience
- 3+ years laboratory experience in either academic or industry setting preferred
- Experience with bacterial culture and plasmid DNA preparation, purification, and application methods are preferred.
- Experience with instrument development is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess a clear understanding and have proven experience in basic molecular biology techniques (including DNA, RNA and protein handling, PCR, qPCR, nucleic acid quantification methods, serial dilutions, and buffer preparation).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret, summarize, and report on scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner.
- Effective organizational skills, including evaluating, prioritizing, and balancing multiple/changing projects and priorities to ensure timely completion.
- Familiarity with automated nucleic acid purification workflow setup and validation.
- Comfortable with hands on troubleshooting instrument hardware and software.
- Ability to think critically and desire to drive constant improvement and product ideas through creativity and innovation.
- Ability to interview customers for Voice of the Customer feedback on products.
- Ability to read a scientific paper, reproduce the experiments described and understand the conclusions.
