Sorrento Therapeutics ("Sorrento") is seeking an experienced Director of Environmental Health & Safety to lead and implement companywide health and safety processes.


The Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) will lead Sorrento Therapeutics' enterprise wide EHS program and implement EHS compliance & EHS risk management processes for Sorrento worldwide. This leader will be responsible for driving EHS performance improvement, mentor and motivate colleagues within the broader team. Expected to integrate the EHS program with Leadership and further integrate EHS into daily operations. Builds a strong EHS culture and a collaborative team-oriented approach to EHS management across the enterprise.

The Director, EHS will coordinate initiatives related to property risk management, product environmental compliance, energy management, and corporate social responsibility .

  • Develop and implement enterprise wide EHS management programs to ensure full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Assess and cost-effectively manage EHS-related risks with the long-term objective to eliminate hazards and further reduce risk.
  • Support leadership in identifying priorities, objectives, and targets to align the region with corporate strategies and in developing and action plan to drive a strong safety culture company-wide
  • Establish property risk management, product environmental compliance, workers' compensation claims management programs.
  • Develop processes and tools to embed EHS into business operations.
  • Remain up-to-date and conversant with relevant laws, regulations and other statutory requirements that impact EHS across Sorrento.
  • Support sustainability reporting. Utilize knowledge of GRI standards as well as experience/ knowledge of Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Greenhouse Gas emissions calculations and target setting methodology.
  • EHS activities related to acquisitions, both during the due diligence phase and during post-acquisition integration of acquired businesses.
  • Serve as the contact for government agencies.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and leadership on EHS issues within Sorrento, assist Sorrento Leadership in understanding business impacts of EHS issues thereby enabling prudent allocation of resources and decision-making.
  • Mentor colleagues with EHS responsibilities and provide input to performance appraisals for these associates.
  • Provide EHS operational consistency in a fast-paced environment, multi-site environment.
  • Accountable for the delivery of EHS training.
  • Success in this role is highly dependent on the ability to collaborate and develop great working relationships with stake holders. Stake holders for this role include but are not limited to clinical manufacturing teams, R&D teams, regulatory, quality, business teams and government agency representatives.

  • Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience or master's degree with 8+ years of experience. EHS-related licenses, certifications and/or membership in EHS professional associations are desired.
  • Proven experience in managing EHS or related programs within the Pharma/BioPharma/BioTech industries.
  • Experience driving sustainability reporting. Knowledge of GRI standards as well as experience/ knowledge of Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Greenhouse Gas emissions calculations and target setting methodology.
  • Operation or business management experience, and experience with lean manufacturing tools and techniques.
  • Working-level project leadership and department or functional area management
  • Experience with acquisitions and risk and liability management is preferred.
  • Must be able to view issues in a systematic and logical way.
  • Well-organized, detail oriented and accurate.
  • Able to deliver consistent, high value-added work products through own initiative while prioritizing multiple workloads and tasks.
