Position Summary:

The Director for Civil Aviation Environmental Policy reports directly to the Vice President, Civil Aviation. The position is responsible for developing strategic direction and priorities within assigned areas of focus and coordinating industry consensus positions. A major focus of this position will be general sustainability activity for current and future aircraft technologies (including sustainable alternative fuels), and advocating efficient regulatory approaches for aviation emissions, noise and chemical policy. This role will engage with multiple domestic and international agencies and other trade organizations in support of AIA positions and to ensure stakeholder alignment.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for monitoring and addressing all environmental issues that impact the design, manufacture, and operation of new and in-production aircraft types and coordinating the association's activities in these areas.


  • Coordinates committees, subcommittees and working groups established to address U.S. and international policies and regulatory issues within the area of focus. The aforementioned groups formulate industry positions to be presented to U.S., foreign, and international agencies, bureaus and commissions, or respond to government inquiries dealing with special areas of concern requiring industry input.


  • Drives industry consensus, drafting and refining AIA's positions on the issues and topics under consideration and in communicating these to appropriate agency officials and relevant organizations.


  • Represents AIA at industry meetings: organizing and chairing sessions, speaking or serving as a panelist/moderator. Works with other organizations and trade groups to inform them of AIA positions.


  • Analyzes various trends, issues, areas of concern and emerging patterns pertaining to domestic and international manufacture and operation of aircraft to provide insight into future developments and to anticipate the need for association positions and actions. These areas include economic and technical trends, flight safety and regulation, aircraft environmental performance, legislative initiatives, and R&D policy.


  • Maintains liaison with senior policy level counterparts in member companies, U.S. and foreign governments, international organizations, other associations, and academia covering technical and legislative matters to define issues and focal points.


  • Reviews and analyzes available data, academic reports, relevant studies, and government policies/regulations/legislation to inform an industry position.


  • Initiates actions to develop other data or material needed to substantiate positions.


  • Contributes articles and news items to the AIA newsletters , or other communications highlighting issues and developments within area of expertise and responsibility.
