HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Educator Guide interprets the organization's collection of animals and plants and connects guests of all ages to wildlife and conservation in various program formats. Educator Guides support San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. This position reports to the Education Supervisors. WHAT WILL YOU DO? * Educates and interprets SDZWA collection and conservation projects * Conducts a variety of programs both in-person and in a virtual format * Gives input to program developers * Operates a variety of organization vehicles, audio/visual equipment, and utilizes telecommuting technology * Handles artifacts and bio facts * Collects program feedback * Escorts groups into behind the scenes areas of the Zoo * Works with a variety of different visitor and school groups * Monitors program materials and props * May conduct on-site and off-site programs for schools throughout San Diego County * Handle a variety of animals in accordance with Zoo guidelines and protocols * Present wildlife to the public for tours, small group encounters, and public presentations * Ensure wildlife safety in vehicles when traveling off-grounds * Educates and interprets for organized school groups from preschool through college age * Provides tours for a variety of different groups including conventions, VIPs, disabled, seniors, donors and membership groups * Interacts with groups to meet specific needs and assists with public relations special events * Maintain logs and records concerning animal health and observe behaviors of our wildlife and report abnormal conditions * Conducts programs on Zoo grounds which necessitate additional bus training and licensing WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? The San Diego Zoo is seeking friendly, cooperative, motivated and outgoing employees for the position of Educator Guide. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Educator Guides are skilled at implementing a variety of educational programs for a wide range of ages (preschool - adult). An Educator must be a highly skilled communicator with an ability to present accurate information in a fun and entertaining manner. He/she must also have strong behavior management skills using a positive approach to challenges associated with guest behavior. Educators are required to have the skills to work with diverse groups and be sensitive to people with special needs. Educators are trained to handle the Zoo's tractable wildlife and previous wildlife experience is highly desirable. Experience with children ages 18 months - 6 years old is preferred. Duties include interpretation of science concepts based on the Zoo's wildlife and plant collection. A four-year college degree or equivalent experience, as well as at least two years of experience in an informal education facility (camps, museums, and science centers), is required. A teaching credential and formal education experience is preferred. Knowledge of hands-on teaching methods is desirable. Success at conducting programs in an outdoor setting and the ability to communicate while operating a vehicle or walking is essential. Vehicles will include single and double decked buses as well as carts and SUVs. Ideal candidates will be bilingual in English/Spanish. A good driving record and a valid California driver license in good standing is required. Selected candidates may work any of the seven days of the week, especially weekends. Hours can range from 2 to 40+ hours per week. Final applicants may be required to do a presentation and must either pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical or possess a current valid certificate.
