Job Description

Our company's Research Laboratories in South San Francisco is a brand-new innovation hub designed to foster collaboration between scientists to discover new medicines to improve human health. Retinal Diseases Discovery Biology group is seeking a driven and creative Senior Scientist to join our drug discovery team. This is an exciting opportunity for an independent scientist to drive target identification and validation activities in close collaboration with colleagues in Biology, Chemistry and Biologics teams at our Research Division's South San Francisco and across broader company network. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished scientist with proven track record high impact research in retinal diseases with direct hands-on experience with state of the art in vitro pre-clinical models of dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). This position requires high level of motivation and enthusiasm for drug discovery coupled with the ability to plan and execute experiments focused on novel target discovery and validation in a highly collaborative environment.

A successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Developing innovative drug targets to address high unmet medical need in dry AMD
  • Designing and implementing platforms for target identification and validation utilizing in vitro cell-based assays focused on retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell biology
  • Providing necessary support to clinical and translational biomarkers groups
  • Independently managing functional deliverables for discovery program(s)
  • Mentoring and developing junior scientists
  • Establishing and maintaining effective collaborations with internal and external partners, including leading academic laboratories
  • Providing scientific expertise in retinal diseases to help formulate drug discovery strategy

Education Minimum Requirement
  • Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics or related biological discipline and at least 3 years of post-doctoral training

Required Skills and Experience
  • Evidence of scientific productivity based on publications, presentations and patents
  • Hands on experience with in vivo and in vitro models of dry AMD including human iPSC derived RPE cell lines
  • Deep knowledge of molecular pathways driving RPE and photoreceptor degeneration in AMD
  • Ability to solve complex biological problems by undertaking innovative approaches and applying state-of-the-art technologies including CRISPR/Cas9 tools
  • Expertise in molecular and cellular biology, cell-based assay, and ex vivo sample processing and analysis
  • Excellent oral presentation and communication skills.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with target ID and validation in an industry setting
  • Deep understanding of retina/RPE/choroid tissue homeostasis and metabolism
  • Experience with various -omics technologies and their application for target discovery (NGS technologies, proteomics and metabolomics)
