Newmont operations in South America are trough two different companies, Newmont Peru SRL and Minera Yanacocha SRL.

Newmont Peru SRL was founded in 1983 as an exploration mining company whose main objective is obtain new gold reserves.

Minera Yanacoca SRL start their operations in 1992 in Cajamarca City partnership with Buenaventura, is the largest gold mine in South America.

About this role

Provide leadership and direction for all mining operations, exploration activities, projects and office complexes in the areas of environmental and permitting within the region. This includes ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and implementing and maintaining conformance with Newmont policies, standards, procedures and guidelines. Support the implementation of corporate strategies related to Energy & Climate, Closure and Water. Ensure consistency in strategy and execution of the environmental and permitting functions throughout South America. Including tracking of targets and metrics, data review and reporting. Supporting site in the development of significant event follow-up and application of lessons learned.

Provide generalist operational risk and performance direct and oversight for internal reporting of environmental activities for the sites within the region. Support planning, resourcing, objective setting and performance evaluation for environmental teams and the site level. Interact and coordinate with S&ER Regional leadership. Supporting investment systems reviews, peer reviews, 3Rs and M&A.

Essential Duties
  • Promote and implement the Companys environmental strategy, policies and standards within the region, and lead continuous improvement within the region through implementation of the Integrated Management System and other programs. Promote and implement the environmental strategy, policies and standards. Coordinate and participate in environmental audits and inspections throughout the region.
  • Develop and review strategies and annual goals and plans for development of the regional operations programs. Provide support to site personnel in ensuring adequate resources, personnel and reporting relationships exist for environmental and permitting.
  • Review and participate in investigations of environmental significant potential events occurring in the region. Track corrective actions to ensure completion, effectiveness and adequate documentation of evidence.
  • Support regional budgeting responsibilities for environmental and permitting and contribution to site business planning. Liaison with RLT on critical environmental and permitting matters.
  • Prepare, submit and present weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. Participate in meetings, prepare and deliver presentations, and track action items to ensure completion.
  • Support reviews of life-of-mine and Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO) closure cost estimates for the regions. Participate and support due diligence activities and other environmental assessments conducted in the Region, as required by the corporate office (i.e. due diligence for possible acquisitions, assessment of legacy sites, global initiatives, etc.)
  • Provide technical support and assistance to the operations on matters related to environmental and permitting.

Training & Experience

Knowledge:
  • Strong data management and project management skills
  • Experience in providing leadership, direction, guidance and support at a regional level with respect to the environmental and permitting functions associated with the operations, exploration, projects and office complexes.
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-functional collaboration and the ability to work with internal and external partners
  • Broad business knowledge and focus with the ability to recognize issues, problems and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Demonstrated attend to details and ability achieve and manage deadlines and priorities.
  • Have an intimate knowledge of environmental protection relative to unit processes in all aspects of mining.
  • Must understand the mining business such that mining activities can be translated and communicated to lay persons.
  • Strong business acumen such that a business case can be made for proposed environmental programs.
  • Ability to assist in development of environmental strategies in the context of overall project and country strategies that allow the mining business to be successful while protecting the environment and mitigating environmental risk.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing environmental baseline studies (biodiversity and other) and environmental impact studies or other environmental permitting.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communications skills.

Experience:
  • Formal Education: Bachelors Degree in environmental sciences, mining or other appropriate certificates or related fields. Masters if possible
  • Experience: at least 15 years of progressive experience in leading areas of environment and permitting.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience working in the mining industry or other industry in the area of environmental and permitting.
  • Minimum of 5 years working in an international context.
  • 10 years in a leadership role.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent project management, written communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Very good interpersonal relations and leadership, capacity for analysis and synthesis, confidentiality, good communication, good listening and questioning skills, knowledge about the business, teamwork, project management, strategic thinking, customer service, and act as a proactive change facilitator/
  • Strong analytical skills to be able to gather, interpret and collate information for reporting
  • Ability to mentor, coach and direct working groups.

Working Conditions

  • The primary location for this position is Miami, FL though candidate's willing to relocate to Miami, or candidates located in proximity to one of our South America regional operations are encouraged to apply
  • Position may be required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites, up to 20%
