The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planets most pressing problems from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war. The worsening effects of climate change and persistent systemic racism make it clear: we need intersectional climate action now. But Big Oil and its money stand in the way of the progress were trying to make. The Climate Accountability team at UCS works to remove the fossil fuel industry as a barrier to the just and equitable climate and energy policies we need. Were challenging some of the most powerful and well-resourced corporations in the world, and were looking for a team member to be our Corporate Analyst and Advocate. The ideal candidate will be able to read between the lines of financial reports and PR spin from fossil fuel companies to see the truth and then leverage the findings to challenge these companies to slash global warming emissions and help limit the worst impacts of climate change.

As the Corporate Analyst and Advocate, you will oversee corporate campaign research; develop and write reports, fact sheets, and other materials; engage directly with companies, their investors, financial analysts, and other influencers; help us respond to new developments in and around the fossil fuel industry; conduct targeted policy analysis and advocacy efforts; and cultivate allies and coalitions. You will play an integral role in a dynamic, innovative campaign to hold fossil fuel corporations accountable for climate deception, and secure justice for people and communities harmed by corporate misconduct.

Responsibilities

Design and oversee research related to fossil energy corporations climate actions and responsibilties. Analyze corporate annual reports, financial statements, sustainability reports, investor communications, and other required and voluntary disclosures. Investigate and document affiliations with and funding of trade associations, thinktanks, and other industry groups. Evaluate individual companies climate-related progress and performance relative to established metrics and criteria.
Plan and implement research projects to analyze, expose and assess selected fossil energy companies climate-related positions, pledges, and actions. Set goals; design and coordinate overall projects through equitable and inclusive processes; provide guidance and support to the research team.Gather and analyze data; write and edit reports, fact sheets, and advocacy materials.
Develop and implement effective strategies for engaging major fossil energy companies, their financiers, and surrogates. Directly engage with corporate target(s) and provide strategic guidance to staff in corporate engagement strategy, protocols, and safeguards.
Monitor campaign-related developments and ensure appropriate and timely responses. Identify emerging opportunities, prioritize best opportunities, and facilitate strategic and timely responses, including involvement of supporters and experts. Research, prepare, or review accuracy of written materials and public statements.
Advance legislative, regulatory, and other standard-setting initiatives to hold fossil fuel companies accountable, reduce the industrys political influence, and promote a just transition to clean energy. Develop testimony, letters, and technical comments for legislative and regulatory proceedings, in coordination with lobbying, outreach, and communications colleagues.
Cultivate, coordinate, and manage relationships with investors, shareholder advocates, financial experts, community partners, and other specialized constituencies necessary to advance our campaign goals and UCS justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. Manage, initiate, and/or coordinate high-level convenings, conferences, and symposia. Be a UCS spokesperson at conferences and in other venues, raising the profile of the campaign on social media platforms, and engaging with the media.
Requirements
Qualifications and Experience

This position requires at least seven years of comparable and relevant experience:

corporate research and analysis including experience engaging with corporate representatives over research findings.
Strong quantitative, qualitative, analytical, and project management skills and experience.
Strong communication skills and proven ability to research, write, and produce high quality, technically rigorous, accessible documents for a variety of audiences.
Ability to work independently, multi-task, and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a deep commitment to advancing these values.
Understanding of corporate finance, investment firms, financial institutions, institutional investors, risk management, and corporate social responsibility highly preferred.
Experience with public policy advocacy is preferred
May spend extended periods at computer. Extensive travel (10 or more overnights per year) is required; may include some international travel.

Benefits:

This is a full-time position based in UCSs Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $80,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.

Comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.
