The EPA National Student Services Contract has an immediate opening for a full time Environmental GUI Support position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports high-quality research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

What the EPA project is about

The Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER) plans, coordinates and conducts an applied, customer-driven, national research and development program to improve decision making by EPA, federal, state, tribal and local agencies, when faced with challenging environmental problems in the built environment. Within CESER, the Water Infrastructure Division (WID) conducts customer-driven research and support, providing scientific leadership on national-scale problems associated with water quality in the built infrastructure.

WID works to develop tools and data that can be used by EPA, States, communities, water utilities and engineers to solve complex water treatment issues. The Water Treatment Plant model was developed to model the expected performance of a treatment plant to aid in understanding how many utilities are likely to meet proposed regulations. The ETDOT (Environmental Technologies Design Option Tools) suite of software models unit operations for water treatment to aid utilities and engineers in sizing and operating specific unit operations.

As a team member, you will assist WID staff with the duties required to support and advance the dissemination and use of the Water Treatment Plant Model and ETDOT, including:

  • Updating graphical user interface of packages included in ETDOT from Visual Basic 6, to current Visual Studio compatibility to ensure Windows10 compatibility;
  • Supporting GitHub activities to share code and update code to support bug fixes;
  • Assistance with using and testing Water Treatment Plant and ETDOT modeling software. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring the codes perform as expected and complete tests as expected; and
  • Assisting with development of presentations, how to videos, and manuscripts.

The student shall perform duties according to specifications and instructions provided by the mentor. All necessary instructions and training shall be provided by the EPA mentor.
