Marine Operations at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science invites highly qualified applicants to apply for the Marine Safety Officer Position.
The Marine Operations Department is comprised of a dedicated group of professionals whose primary function is to provide safe access to the marine environment for all students, staff, faculty and other users and to support the needs of these users as they relate to vessels, field support services, instrument fabrication, equipment repair and servicing.
The Marine Safety Officer develops, implements and manages programs and protocols to address safety and liability concerns inherent in marine research/instructional activities involving the use of vessels under the auspices of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and William & Mary School of Marine Science. This position oversees daily vessel activities to ensure accepted standards of vessel operation are employed in risk management planning and ensures compliance with VIMS's policies, United States Coast Guard (USCG) safety regulations and other best marine practices associated with conducting research from vessels. This position manages the VIMS' vessel training program for personnel operating trailerable vessels and schedules all small vessel usage through the Event Management System software (EMS). This position oversees the VIMS' Dive Program as qualifications allow and serves as crew on VIMS vessel when needed. The marine safety officer reports directly to the director of marine operations.
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
* Ensures that all vessels operated or maintained by VIMS Marine Operations have all the appropriate safety equipment on board and all vessels are crewed by qualified operators.
* Partners closely with the port engineer to ensure that all vessels scheduled for field work are well maintained and ready for use when requested.
* Utilizes various software programs to facilitate efficient scheduling and maintenance on all vessels in the VIMS fleet.
* Partners closely with science groups to ensure the vessels requested by researchers will meet their scientific objectives and, when appropriate, advise science groups on field sampling techniques and procedures.
* Maintains current knowledge of marine related safety regulations and implements new policies, procedures and/or programs as directed.
* Supervises various sea-going personnel including the dive safety officer.
