Summary: The Senior Environmental Manager directs the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive environmental compliance system across all locations within the company. This position works under immediate supervision of the Vice President of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security. Responsibilities include tracking, verifying, and ensuring compliance with all environmental criteria to support company-wide excellence in the environmental functional areas. This includes annual environmental reporting such as Title V, TRI, SARA Tier II, and TSCA reports. The position ensures compliance with EHSS policies and applicable regulations through partnership with local management at each facility, as well as the corporate support roles.

Essential Functions:
  • Prepare, manage, and seek to improve an Environmental Compliance budget
  • Provide support and assistance to the Vice President as needed to carry out the essential functions of the department
  • Ensure environmental permits are obtained or renewed as necessary to support plant projects and ongoing operations
  • Monitor performance of department programs and processes; recommend/develop actions to respond to deficiencies
  • Recruit, training, hire and mentor other EHSS department staff including new hires, plant EHSS and corporate EHSS
  • Manage transition of new acquisition plants and platforms for environmental gaps, liabilities, and compliance
  • Provide technical support and guidance for all environmental permits for designated sites within the region and ensure timely submission of initial applications and applications for renewal or modification
  • Ensures sites follow environmental regulations and permit conditions
  • Work closely with the Senior Safety Manager to align programs across the EHSS spectrum of requirements
  • Assist sites with EHSS recordkeeping and ensure timely submission of periodic reports to regulatory agencies
  • Provide guidance to sites in identifying and tracking appropriate metrics and assessing site performance
  • Follow-up and report to corporate on status of consulting projects for each site
  • Implement technological solutions to simplify compliance and reduce environmental footprint
  • Support ESG metrics by leading projects that improve sustainability metrics
  • Develop and implement comprehensive environmental training across the enterprise
  • Track environmental compliance status of reporting and recordkeeping for each site
  • Provide guidance, technical expertise, and leadership to EHS and Plant Managers within region
  • Lead annual reporting initiatives for TRI, SARA Tier II, Title V and TSCA
  • Coordinate with PSM Program Manager and Vice President on the RMP
  • Regularly travel to operational locations to assess compliance
  • Develop and implement a plant environmental audit protocol utilizing third party or internal auditors
  • Develop and implement disposal vendor audits to ensure proper handling of all waste products
  • Support site management to close audit findings and implement audit recommendations (internal and external audits)
  • Lead, coordinate, and participate in EHSS performance improvement initiatives
  • Address any regulatory audits, findings, NOVs, and action items promptly
  • Maintain and manage DHS CSAT files, requirements, and reporting
  • Maintain up-to-date records at all times to comply with inspections by state and federal agencies
  • AST Permitting, licensing, and reporting
  • Lead investigations into significant incidents
  • DOT Hazmat Registrations for all facilities
  • Assist in shutdown planning
  • Professional Development as necessary to complete

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations dealing with environmental permitting, air and water quality, hazardous waste, emergency response and mitigation, water use and discharge, storm water, EPA Title V and CAA regulations, RMP, FRP, NPDES, SWPPP, SPCC, OSHA general industry and construction standards including process safety management
  • Knowledge of process safety management, DOT, FDA, OSHA general industry standards a plus
  • Detail-oriented; proficiency for accuracy; dependable; positive attitude; team player
  • Strong knowledge of root cause analysis techniques
  • Strong MS Office experience and proficiency with developing and using spreadsheets and/or databases.
  • Ability to lead by example, multi-task, and take ownership of assigned projects
  • Ability to provide rational oversight and control to the department in times of crisis
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Exceptional organizational skills as they pertain to record keeping and reporting
  • Bachelor degree in science, engineering, or related field required, 15+ years of experience in related field.
  • Ethanol or heavy industry experience a plus, Strong Environmental Background Required.
  • Travel will be expected monthly - up to 50% of the time.
