Principal Scientific Researcher - Structural Biology

The Department of Structural Biology at Genentech has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Principal Scientific Researcher (PSR) with expertise in protein biochemistry and structural biology. This Principal Scientific Researcher will join a group focused on generation and optimization of recombinant proteins for drug discovery efforts and discovery research. Working with multiple groups across Genentech, the Researcher will be responsible for generating high-quality protein reagents to support small and large molecule drug discovery, high throughput screening, assay development and structural biology efforts. This role will involve considerable bench work, including the use of robotic platforms for protein purification, and protein characterization by biophysical & biochemical methods. Hands-on experience with X-ray crystallography, including sample preparation and crystallization is highly desirable. The individual will work independently at the bench and collaborate with colleagues across various functional areas to generate and communicate data to further research and drug discovery.
Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have either a BS/MS degree with ~6-10 years of experience or a PhD with 0-2 years of experience in Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Structural Biology or a related discipline. Relevant experience in generating challenging proteins across a range of protein families is required. A record of achievement and collaboration, documented by peer-reviewed publications is highly valued.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

Strong candidates will have many of the following skills and attributes:

Working knowledge of construct design strategies.

Experience in protein expression systems such as E coli , mammalian or insect.

Hands-on experience designing and optimizing the production of challenging protein targets for structural and/or functional studies.

Experience in purification and assembly of multi-protein complexes.

Expertise with modern protein purification and chromatography techniques, and knowledgeable with operating AKTA chromatography systems as well as analytical HPLC systems.

Hands-on experience in protein crystallization, crystal optimization and harvesting for data collection.

Exposure to cryo-EM sample and grid preparation.

Proficiency with methods to characterize protein quality and purity, such as mass spectrometry, SEC-MALS/DLS, endotoxin assays, CD, and DSF/thermal shift assays.

Expertise with biophysical and biochemical protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid interaction techniques and/or functional assays.

Passion for exploring and developing new technologies.

Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Team-oriented, collaborative nature with fearless attitude to tackle long standing difficult problems in research and drug discovery.
