Associate Director, Biology - GDD Exploratory Hub

Agios (agios.com) is a biopharmaceutical company focused on providing medicines for some of the world's most challenging diseases. We're committed to applying our scientific leadership in cellular metabolism to transform the lives of patients with genetically defined diseases (GDD), encompassing both rare and more common diseases, and mining the extensive potential in the PK platform. We are leading the way in advancing PKR activation for hemolytic anemias, including pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency, thalassemia and sickle cell disease, and have demonstrated a strong commitment to these patient communities. We continue to foster a productive research engine that yields new insights and potential therapeutic approaches. We're a company that cares about our work, each other, and the people who are counting on us the most. We're inspired to think big and welcome the different perspectives and backgrounds needed to deliver extraordinary results. We're driven to be our best selves, together, so we can reach for the Other Side of Possible.

Agios Pharmaceuticals is searching for a motivated and intellectually curious PhD scientist to lead our Genetic Defined Disease (GDD) Exploratory/Target Discovery Hub on our Biology team. The exploratory GDD hub is responsible for identifying and characterizing novel targets for the treatment of GDDs across multiple therapeutic areas.

Key Responsibilities

The PhD scientist will employ their scientific and analytic skills to develop/deliver scientific rationale to support the target Identification and validation efforts in the GDD Biology Department. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a team to identify future pipeline opportunities and to conceptualize therapeutic strategies supported by the design and execution of key decisional experiments. The candidate will act as champion to cooperate with key internal stakeholders (therapeutic area hubs) to coordinate project centric analyses, as well as collaborating with external scientific experts. This appropriate candidate will work closely with the Head of GDD Biology and interface with multiple line functions across the company (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Metabolomics, Pharmacology) to advance scientific proposals for approval by Agios leadership.
  • PhD with 8+yrs post PhD research experience, and a track record of high-profile peer reviewed publications with a strong scientific background in genetic disorders or metabolism
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced genetic methods to genetically manipulate cellular models such as under expression (CRISPR, siRNA, shRNA) and overexpression (cDNAs, mtDNA, and FlipIn) strategies.
  • Able to quickly assimilate new information, critically evaluate team inputs & literature data, summarize and communicate concepts/key takeaways effectively
  • Attention to detail, demand for high-quality work, and sense of passion and urgency to achieve goals and improve the lives of patients.
  • Creativity/open-mindedness/willingness to partner with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to meet the needs of varied audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to work closely with partners, contractors, consultants, and team members across functions.
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven track record of success in his/her field, the capacity to work effectively with minimal supervision, plan strategically, achieve goals on time and communicate effectively.
  • Independent ability to design and execute biology experiments for the identification and validation of novel GDD drug targets, including phenotypic and mechanistic cell-based assays
  • Management experience of several scientists focused on developing new cell/animal biological models and assessing therapeutic agents in models of disease biology
  • Experience with small molecule drug discovery
