The Carver College of Medicine Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is seeking a Research Assistant to execute procedures in a gene therapy research laboratory for animal disease model development. Perform select bioassays required for the care of the diseased animals, perform PCR and other genotyping assays, record and consolidate data. Duties Include: * Research * Execute procedures in a gene therapy research laboratory for animal disease model development. Perform select bioassays required for the care of the diseased animals, perform PCR and other genotyping assays, record and consolidate data * Conduct Experiments * Perform PCR and other genotyping techniques * Execute basic procedures in experimental animals, including harvesting tissues, blood, DNA, RNA and proteins * Perform enzymatic assays; CRISPR/Cas9 mediated gene targeting; protein immunoassays; Western and Southern blotting * Prepare data for analysis and assist in research and writing for the publication of manuscripts * Facilities and Equipment Management * Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment * Supervision/Staffing * Supervision is received from senior research staff * Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and students * Collaboration and Embracing Diversity * Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals from varied cultures, race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity * Positive Impact/Achieving Results * Ability to utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals/needs * Able to demonstrate ethical behavior in diverse situations while producing results * Service Excellence/Customer Focus * Ability to meet or exceed customer service needs and expectations and provide excellent service in a direct or indirect manner * Ability to effectively transmit and interpret information through appropriate communication with internal and external customers Our mission is to inspire and educate world class health care providers and scientists for the people of Iowa and our global community. Percent of Time: 100% Pay Grade: 3A Type of Position: Specified Term/ One Year Benefits Highlights: Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa Fringe benefit package including paid vacation; sick leave; health, dental, life and disability insurance options; and generous employer contributions into retirement plans Required Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in biomedical-related science, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a relevant field of study * Must be able to translate, adapt and apply that knowledge to perform beginning level research in a health science field or discipline * Requires skills in molecular biology and cell biology research * Fine motor skills are required for animal tissue collection along with animal handling experience * Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required Desirable Qualifications * 6 months to 2 years previous research experience including experience with: * Genotyping * PCR and Q-PCR * DNA/RNA/protein purification * Cloning * Collecting tissue samples from small animals * Primary cell cultures * Western blotting Application Process: In order to be considered, applicants must upload a CV or resume (under submission relevant materials) that clearly address how they meet the listed required and desired qualifications of this position.
