The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate II position to work as a Data Management Specialist at the Physical Oceanography Department (PhOD) at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (NOAA/AOML).

The successful applicant will provide scientific support such as data processing, auditing, editing, reporting, etc. The incumbent will support software development, data analysis, data management, product development and operations of a suite of observing platforms, such as XBTs (eXpendable BathyThermograph), underwater gliders, satellites, etc. Duties include but are not limited to contribute to the development, updating, maintenance and improvement of data quality control, data processing, generating graphics, and web sites development and maintenance.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with developing software as needed for XBT, underwater glider, and satellite data analysis. Assist with developing software to create and maintain online products to be updated automatically, using data from the above-mentioned instruments.
  • The employee will create and maintain web pages to display products obtained from the above projects, maintain and improve software programs for the monitoring of upper ocean water mass properties and dynamic features.
  • The employee will process data and generate graphic to extract useful scientific and operational information regarding temporal and/or spatial variability of the upper ocean for weather, ocean, climate, and fisheries studies.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the web pages of the XBT and underwater glider related projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • The successful applicant must have a Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics or related field, and at least two years of relevant experience in database management and software development for data processing.
  • Necessary technical skills include programming in Matlab, Python, shell scripts, and php for web pages.
  • It is preferred that the incumbent also has knowledge of software and automatizing data processing systems in various programming languages, such as C, Python, and Java, within the Linux operating system.
