Job Description
Our Animal Health Research Laboratories team work tirelessly to invent solutions to improve the health and wellbeing of animals. The Principal Scientist in our Research and Development Division will be responsible for identifying new vaccine candidates and technologies for animal health use at our Company Laboratories. The successful candidate will lead these research programs from ideation through the early research and proof-of-concept phase up to the development and licensing stage. He/she will interface with researchers and senior management throughout the organization at our Research & Development Division, external partners, as well as the R&D organization of Animal Health Division. He/she will lead cross-functional project teams and will interact with various stakeholders including but not limited to Regulatory Affairs, Global Marketing, Technical Operations, Manufacturing and Quality controls. The incumbent will operate within a matrix structure to source the necessary research work (Virology, Bacteriology, Disease Models, Formulation Development, Potency test development, Safety & Efficacy). He/she will report directly to the Director of the Research & Development Division.
The position is responsible for:
• Group leader for research and development of ruminant vaccine projects for registration with regional and global authorities.
• Establishing a proficient communication and efficient collaboration with internal customers in other Departments (Regulatory, Marketing, Technical Services, Quality Control and Assurance, Manufacturing) with the goal of developing ruminant vaccines in the shortest possible time with the best possible label claims in the industry
• Establishing relationships with external collaborators like Contract Research Organizations and University and Institute Scientists to support Project Development and enhance the Ruminants R&D Projects portfolio
• Supervising Scientists and Associates in all Project related activities and to manage professional development of all personnel reporting into this position
• Creating study designs for vaccine development that generate the appropriate information required for Product registration with USDA and to properly collect, evaluate/analyze and report the studies data.
• Preparing, reviewing and auditing all Project related reports and data needed to secure new product registrations with USDA and other Regulatory Agencies.
• Providing site/organization with a high level of knowledge on the scientific information related to Animal Diseases Evolution or Emergence and Appropriate Technologies.
• Bringing to the department technical knowledge by reviewing appropriate technical literature and/or attending relevant Ruminant or Scientific Meetings
• Starting/maintaining Project Management tools and providing project reports/updates as required.
• Planning and tracking project budget and resources requirements.
• Supporting other Departments when technical issues arise in the areas of vaccine manufacturing, testing or performance in the field
Education:
- Required: PhD and/or DVM/VMD
Required Experience:
- Minimum of (10) years industry or biological research experience in vaccine discovery or preclinical research, preferably with a focus on viral vaccine development.
- Advanced and thorough scientific knowledge of vaccine research and development, disease mechanisms and related preclinical models
- Expertise in one of the following fields: microbiology, virology, immunology, biotechnology
- Ability to manage multiple projects, including budgets, contracts, and timelines
- Ability to independently plan, recommend and complete research programs
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective creator of executive level presentations and documents
- Experience in preparing basic patent applications in support of patent coverage of research efforts
- Project management skills
- Experience in animal research
- Experience managing direct reports
- Knowledge of 9CFR regulatory aspects of animal vaccine licensure
- 10 % Travel
Preferred Experience:
- Knowledge and experience working in the area of cattle diseases and vaccines
- Knowledge of international regulatory regulations such as EU Pharmacopeia, GLP, GCP and GMP
- Experience in developing and managing collaborations with outsource providers, vendors, contractors and academic institutions
- Experience in working with business development to identify and license external technology opportunities
