Astellas is announcing an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA.
Purpose:
The Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating and implementing all applicable Federal and State Environmental, Health and Safety regulations as well as compliance with internal Astellas standards. Based in Cambridge, MA and Westborough, MA
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Drive improvements in site EHS culture, awareness, and accountability
- Lead efforts to operationalize EHS at sites
- Ensure site personnel understand and align with all environmental permits
- Plan and conduct EHS training
- Coordinate compliance assurance program, perform site audits, and work with management team to implement corrective actions
- Conduct incident / accident investigations and develop corrective and preventative action plans
- Maintain EHS expertise to provide technical and regulatory support to Operations team
- Maintain site EHS metrics and work collaboratively with EHS management on various projects and initiatives, including culture change, safety inspections, chemical waste management and environmental regulations.
- Understand regulatory changes and trends and forecast site impacts
- Actively contribute to the direction and content of site EHS programs
- Working Relationships - Must demonstrate effective communication and develop working relationships with senior management, front line supervision, as well as, other employees
- Reviews the procurement of chemicals and materials purchased for production, engineering, and R&D, including the maintenance of the library of SDS's
Organizational Context:
- Reports to: Associate Director, EHS
Qualifications:
Required:
- B.S. degree with 3+ years, MS with 0-2 years of laboratory experience
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations, industry standards and best management practices pertaining to occupational health & safety;
- Technical and practical knowledge of biotechnology, research and development and/or manufacturing is highly recommended, or a willingness to quickly become proficient is required.
- Ability to work with people in a culturally diverse environment;
- Excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation);
- Lead initiatives of moderate scope and impact
- Ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously
- Effective problem identification and solution skills
- Proven analytical and organizational ability
Preferred:
- B.S. in Environmental/Health and Safety Science, engineering, or Applied Sciences degree
- 3 years' experience in biotechnology and / or Environmental, Health and Safety
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) is a plus.
- Solid understanding of cGMP
