POSITION DESCRIPTION:The Freshwater Mussel Conservation Program (FMCP) is seeking a freshwater biologist with high level organizational, analytical, and communication skills to lead the Gainesville branch of the mussel program. The knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform job duties are: Knowledge of current quantitative and qualitative methods used to sample freshwater invertebrates. Knowledge of current issues in aquatic invertebrate ecology. Knowledge of vehicle, boat, and trailer operation and maintenance procedures. Ability to identify freshwater mussels to species level and of techniques and current literature used to identify freshwater mussels. Ability to work long hours in sometimes unpleasant field conditions that may include rain, high winds, rough water, heat, cold, darkness, biting insects, snakes, and alligators. Ability to swim and snorkel. Ability to operate electronic instruments that measure environmental quality parameters, including YSI multiparameter probes, flow meters, and GPS units. Ability and desire to become certified as an AAUS certified science diver. Ability to use analytic software such as R and GIS. Ability to communicate study results effectively in written reports, peer-reviewed scientific publications, and oral presentations. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers in a team environment. Ability to conduct administrative functions associated with project management, including purchasing and detailed record keeping. Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of a long-term monitoring program designed to assess the status of freshwater mussel communities and their habitat in the major river basins of Florida.
  • Participate in and/or lead multiple-day sampling events to Florida rivers and streams.
  • Sample freshwater mussel communities using quantitative and qualitative methods, including snorkeling and SCUBA. Planning of day-trips when not overnight sampling.
  • Species level taxonomic identifications of freshwater invertebrates, including mussels, snails, and crayfish.
  • Assist with compiling and maintaining statewide aquatic invertebrate databases.
  • Data analysis using a variety of statistical software.
  • Use of GIS to produce maps and analyze distribution and habitat data.
  • Purchase equipment and supplies related to freshwater invertebrate research programs strictly following State of Florida purchasing rules and protocols.
  • Project administration, including detailed record keeping and timely submission of forms and records.
  • Production of written reports and documents by strict deadlines. Writing of peer-reviewed publications documenting results, conclusions, and recommendations to management entities.
  • Production of oral presentations and posters for presentation at state and national conferences.
  • Remain current with scientific literature and issues pertinent to freshwater invertebrate taxonomy, ecology, and environmental requirements.
  • Assist Project Leader with freshwater mussel research study design, proposal development, taxonomic identification, and operation of freshwater invertebrate laboratories.
  • Maintenance of project vehicles, boats, motors, trailers, sampling gear, and lab equipment.
  • Supervisory responsibilities associated with the training and supervision of one or more employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university in one of the biological sciences.

PREFFERED CRITERIA:A master's degree in one of the biological sciences from an accredited college or university is preferred.
