Your Specific Responsibilities:

GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM SUPPORT: Provides field and staff support for all environmental health programs, including but not limited to: Public Swimming Pools and Bathing Areas; Healthy Beaches Program, Super-ACT, Biomedical Waste, Mobile Home Parks Sanitation, Sanitary Nuisance Complaints, Indoor Air Quality, and other DOH-Sarasota regulated facilities. Initiates and coordinates enforcement procedures related to assigned duties as required.

PUBLIC SWIMMING POOLS & BATHING PLACES: Perform routine inspections and review plans and applications for operating and permits to determine compliance with Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code, and Sarasota County Code. Collect water samples for bacteriological analysis.

BIOMEDICAL WASTE, TATTOO, AND BODY PIERCING: Conducts and coordinates inspections, investigations, and sanitary surveys in Biomedical Waste, Tattoo, and Body Piercing programs to ensure compliance with all applicable statutes, rules, and ordinances. Acts as a liaison with other DOH divisions, state, federal and local agencies when needed in response to complaints and inquiries regarding biomedical waste issues. Prepares reports to document compliance or non-compliance of assigned programs. Makes recommendations regarding the issuance or denial of permits. Conducts enforcement actions as necessary. Coordinates maintenance of records for all assigned areas ensuring that facility files contain the minimum required documentation per Environmental Health Program Manual 150-4.

LIMITED USE PUBLIC WATER SYSTEMS: Conducts inspections/sanitary surveys of Chapter 64E-8, Limited Use Public Water Systems for compliance with applicable state and county codes. Collects microbiological water samples from 64E-8 Limited Use Public Water Systems. Conducts complaint investigations, reviews chemical and bacteriological analyses, coordinates contact with the public as it relates as assigned. Initiates and coordinates enforcement procedures related to assigned duties as required.

PUBLIC & PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES: Perform routine inspections and review applications and plans for construction and operating permits for private and public drinking water wells and systems and irrigation wells to determine compliance with FS, FAC, and Sarasota County Ordinance. Coordinate and collect drinking water samples in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection and DOH-Bureau of Toxicology for groundwater chemical contamination. Assist all agencies and the public in remediation of contaminated wells. Initiates and coordinates enforcement procedures related to assigned duties as required.

ONSITE SEWAGE TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL SYSTEMS: Perform necessary site evaluations, review plans, and approve or deny the issuance of new construction and repair permits in accordance with Chapter 64E-6 FAC. Inspect new and repair installations to determine compliance with FAC. Provide advice to homeowners and builders on F.S. and FAC permitting. Physically able to lift up to 60 pounds and conduct soil borings to a depth of six feet using a four-inch bucket auger.

SANITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL NUISANCE COMPLAINT INVESTIGATIONS: Investigate reports of sanitary nuisance complaints. Follow-up and assure corrective action have been taken or take necessary legal action in accordance with Florida Statute Chapter 386.

COUNTY AND CITY DEVELOPMENT REVIEW PROCESS: Attends county and municipal plan review meetings and conducts plan reviews and site inspections related to Sarasota County and municipalities development review process. Identify and pursue opportunities where Environmental Public Health can be involved in policy and plan development on issues relating to land use, the built environment, and transportation.

OTHER DUTIES as assigned including providing support for all Environmental Health programs as assigned by Environmental Health Director/ Designee

You will be required to use your personal vehicle for work purposes and reimbursed for mileage per Florida Statute Chapter 112.061

Qualifications:

Minimum -
  • Bachelor's degree in a natural or physical science (if selected for this position, official transcripts will be required)
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Ability to obtain Certification as an Environmental Health Professional during the probationary period
