HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Curator of Birds supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's (SDZWA) mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in wildlife care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Curator of Birds is responsible for proper management and maintenance of the bird collection at a location; and manages staff in various related activities. This position reports to the Director of Wildlife Care. WHAT YOU WILL DO * Responsible for management of Birds staff including, but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, training and performance management * Consult with curatorial, wildlife care, behavioral, registrar, pathology, and veterinary staff and other zoos regarding collection to enhance SDZWA conservation efforts * Evaluate and coordinate bird collection according to zoological collection master plan and established policies * Ensure the preparation and maintenance of a variety of collection records. * Direct bird sales, loans, trades, and purchases according to zoological collection master plan and in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, as well as, SDZWA animal transaction policy * Ensure proper permits are acquired for transactions and that legal requirements in domestic and international shipping of birds are met * Coordinate joint-shipments between Zoo and Safari Park * Direct and evaluate breeding programs ensuring SDZWA organizational objectives are built into each process and decision * Participate in facility planning and research including recommending design changes * Manage off-site projects as needed and in coordination with conservation standards WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is seeking an individual who is inspired to be a part of an organization that is committed to protecting wildlife around the globe. Broad working knowledge of avian natural history and application in collection management. Familiarity with artificial incubation and hand rearing. Experience with managing a large staff and budget. Familiarity with global avian collections. JOB EXPERIENCE * Must have 8 years of experience in increasingly responsible aviculture and bird husbandry work with a diverse collection EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS * Bachelor's Degree in biological or natural sciences or a related field or equivalent specialized training required SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE * Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing * Demonstrated ability of presenting to large groups on topics of wildlife and conservation * Strong working knowledge of bird husbandry * Demonstrated ability and examples of work published in relevant journals.
