Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Renewable Resources and Enabling Sciences Center at NREL has an opportunity available for a full-time post-graduate intern who will be supporting research and development activities related to the metabolic engineering of Pseudomonas putida and Escherichia coli to produce value-added compounds and biomaterials. Responsibilities will include construction and evaluation of bacterial strains for the conversion of low-value carbon (e.g. hydrolysate sugars) into valuable chemicals and materials.
The successful candidate will be able to:
- work safely and independently in a laboratory setting,
- maintain clear records with close attention to detail
- communicate with other researchers in the planning and execution of experimental work,
- communicate scientific results effectively, both written and oral,
- work effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, and biologists,
- maintain a clean lab space with utmost attention to safety

Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience using basic molecular biology techniques including PCR and plasmid construction
- Demonstrated experience in a biology laboratory
- Recent graduate in cell and molecular biology, chemical and biological engineering, bioengineering, biology, chemistry, or a similar field
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Demonstrated experience in a biology laboratory (outside of coursework)
- Experience in microbiology or metabolic engineering
- Experience in iGEM or similar synthetic biology program
- Experience using shake flasks and fermentation bioreactors

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Annual Salary Range: $31,600 - $50,600
Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
Benefits Summary
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
