Internship Description:

The South Carolina Aquarium, Dive Operations Intern position is geared towards those interested in Aquarium Husbandry and running a Dive Safety Program through an Aquarium, University, or Research facility.

The position also is also heavily paired with husbandry of the Great Ocean Tank and The Shallows exhibits, with specific focus on sharks, rays, and our loggerhead sea turtle. Additionally interns may have the opportunity to work with our Reef Research Program and offshore lionfish research project; which could include field diving.

Learning Objectives
  • Follow Aquarium safety, dive safety, and animal protocols
  • Learn Aquarium diving methods & program management including: Full Face Masks, Surface Supply, Underwater Communications, Reserve Air Supply Systems, Gear Repair/Inspections, Dive Team Management, and Dive Shows
  • Learn and follow proper feeding procedures and techniques in caring for animals, and ensure daily care of animals
  • Learn life support system operation and how to maintain tanks, and follow schedule of weekly tank maintenance
  • Be able to state appropriate water quality parameters
  • Be able to recognize signs of disease and understand the purpose of quarantine


Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • College undergraduate or recent post-undergraduate preferred
  • Any major in Natural Science
  • Minimum Advanced Open Water Certification from a national recognized scuba agency
    • Rescue or Pro. Rating (DM, AI, Instructor, etc.) is desirable, but not required
  • At least 25 logged dives in varying conditions
  • prior CPR/AED/O2 knowledge preferred
  • Able to regularly lift at least 50lbs
  • Final acceptance into the internship requires passing of AAUS Physical, Swim, & Scuba Skills test


Commitment Required:
  • 25-40 hours per week
  • 4 months to 6 months (6 months preferred)


Compensation:
  • Unpaid; housing not included
  • College credit may be available through your university

Physical Requirements

Often requires walking, standing, and bending. Regularly requires stooping, crouching, climbing ladders/steps, carrying up to 50 lbs., sitting, kneeling, balancing, pushing and pulling, crawling, working with tools, and working in tight spaces
