Job Description Summary: The Gedan Lab at The George Washington University investigates the response of coastal and marine species and ecosystems to global changes in climate, sea level, nutrient availability, and invasive species. We focus on conservation-priority, shallow, marine ecosystems, especially tidal marsh. We are interested in marsh migration and the conversion of natural and human-dominated uplands, as well as the novel ecosystems and interactions occurring in transitioning coastal areas. Established field sites are in the estuaries and coastal bays of the Mid-Atlantic, including the Virginia Coast Reserve, an NSF Long Term Ecological Research site. The lab is located in GWU's interdisciplinary science building in downtown Washington, DC, across the street from the Foggy Bottom Metro station. The Research Assistant will implement lab, greenhouse, and field experiments that involve monitoring tidal wetland plant species composition, cultivating and propogating wetland plants, salinity manipulations, and seed viability tests. The technician will also help with lab organization, purchasing of supplies and equipment, running major lab equipment, supervising undergraduate research assistants, and establishing lab work flow protocols. Duties: * Set up and monitor field plots and field experiments. This involves monitoring of tidal wetland plant species composition, cultivating and propogating plants, salinity manipulations and seed viability tests. * Plant and soil sample processing in the lab. * Lab organization, documentation of lab protocols, and coordination of student researchers in the lab. * Literature review, data analysis, and communication of research findings. * Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
