The Biosciences Division at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking postdoctoral researchers to join a set of synthetic biology projects. These projects range from constructing synthetic organisms de novo (from first principles) to the development of an underlying strategy for the rapid design and engineering of microbial systems. They will make use of mechanistic modeling and artificial intelligence (AI) driven evaluation to engineer model and non-model microbes to deliver controllable microbial systems capable of sensing and acting on external signals.
As advances in laboratory automation, miniaturization, synthesis, cloning and culturing continue to advance, recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence now create a new era of design and engineering of organisms for specific purposes. Our group is particularly interested in exploiting high throughput capabilities to expand how biological programming is implemented in an end-to-end fashion - i.e., multiple iterations of design, build, test and learn all run autonomously through AI-enabled infrastructure. To accomplish this, we are assembling an interdisciplinary team of experimental molecular biologists and microbiologists along with computational biologists to pursue new advances in molecular biology, robotics, and AI.
ANL is one of the world leaders in computational genomics and AI research and these projects represent a unique opportunity to work in an environment in which experimental research is tightly integrated with cutting edge computational biology. This opportunity will involve close collaborations with researchers at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and other DOE national laboratories.
