The Scientist of Controlled Environment Horticulture will work to design & support a diverse portfolio of plant care products for The Hawthorne Gardening Company. This person will be pivotal in defining nutrient, supplement and pest management products and practices for the retail and commercial hydroponic segment. Associates are expected to participate in our business segment as a hands-on researcher so that they may develop keen insights that contribute to the commercialization of novel products. The eager scientist will have experience in common cultural practices such as irrigation, plant spacing, temperature, humidity and airflow related to the horticulture and hydroponic industry (including ornamental plants, fruits/vegetables, and high-value crops such as hemp). It is vital that the incumbent possess a working knowledge of experimental design and analysis, report writing, and regulatory frameworks. A strong scientific curiosity, excellent communication skills, initiative and independence are also essential characteristics. The scientist will also mine technologies and match them to both articulated and unarticulated grower needs to drive the retail and commercial hydroponics category. This position reports directly to the R&D Product Development Manager.
What you'll do in this role:
Directs the planning and implementation of field, indoor, and greenhouse biological research trials, including trial initiation, data collection, data analysis, report preparation and regulatory documentation.
Collaborates with cross-functional partners including Hawthorne management, other R&D colleagues, marketing, and category leads to ensure field biology trials support the business objectives.
Interacts with industry and university influencers as well as professional growers to understand and mine new technologies, new biological research methods, and grower trends and communicate this information to category leads and sales/ tech service.
Develops and follows R&D Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Communicates scientific concepts and research to senior leadership (including Directors, GM's VP's, COO, CEO and Board Members); demonstrates outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Critical in support of state and EPA registration dossiers, potential partnership or acquisitions, competitive analysis and cost-out initiatives
What you'll need to be successful:
Ph.D. in relevant biological sciences such as horticulture or floriculture preferred, Masters and other candidates with significant and relevant experience will also be considered
Depending on education, 3-5 years of experience in a horticulture-related field, such as controlled environment agriculture (CEA), greenhouse, hydroponics or ornamental container nursery
Strong working knowledge of typical practices in greenhouse/controlled environments, hydroponic and soilless culture including plant nutrition and crop protection practices.
Demonstrated ability to design and lead research programs to answer specific questions to commercialize horticultural products or technologies
A high degree of original thinking is required. The scientist must design research protocols that address key questions and hypotheses for a combination of variables as Hawthorne attempts to optimize the complete solution for growers across all product categories.
Scientific curiosity, personal drive, and networking abilities to find breakthrough technologies, product improvements, and develop novel, cutting-edge, methodology
Willingness to function as part of a hands-on scientific team and mentor/develop other team members (biology technicians/interns)
