Learn more about this agency Responsibilities * Duties listed are at full performance grade GS-07 level. * Provide technical expertise on fire protection and prevention issues. * Analyze, coordinate, organize and develop comprehensive Wildfire Prevention Analysis Plans. * Determine probable cause of fires and collects and preserves evidence. * Plan, organize, supervise, schedule and direct group fire prevention/education contacts with internal and external entities. * Provide continuing fire prevention information and education training to internal/external customers. * Conduct field trips with the media or other interested personnel relating to fire education activities. * Recommend or prepares public service announcements. * Coordinate and conduct thorough and detailed interior and exterior fire prevention inspections. * Issue on the spot Notices of Violations, and designates corrective action. * Recommend issuing burning or campfire permits with regards to fire danger levels. * Conduct field trips with the media or other interested personnel relating to fire education activities. * Establish and maintain external contacts for the purpose of promoting the fire prevention program, explaining applicable rules, regulations and securing cooperation in support of fire prevention education programs and policies. * Perform initial attack on fires and serves as an incident commander for initial action. * Perform suppression operations on fire management unit. * Assist in writing and implementing prescribed burn plans * Prepare reports and obtains information for possible use in apprehension and conviction of trespassers, arsonists, or other violators. * Maintain records and reports including individual fire reports, fire resource orders, and incident action records. Travel Required Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel overnights on fire suppression or fire related assignments for this position. You will be tested for illegal drugs prior to appointment and randomly thereafter. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results. * Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required. * Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable). * Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver's license; a commercial driver's license (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination. * There may be additional Conditions of Employment not listed here, however applicants will be notified of any specific requirements at the time a tentative job offer is made. Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-05. Examples of Specialized Experince include: Performing suppression operations and instructing others during initial attack or assisting with prescribed burns. Giving formal talks and informally providing information on fire prevention laws, rules, and regulations. Issuing various permits and ensuring users were in compliance with rules and regulations. OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture). OR A combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. For the GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-06. Examples include: Assisting in developing and presenting educational programs, and performing extensive public contact work in providing information on fire prevention/protection issues. Issuing burning or campfire permits with regards to fire danger levels, and monitoring them for compliance/non-compliance. Assisting in gathering, processing, analyzing fire risks, hazards and values needed to prepare prevention plans. Performing initial attack on fires and serving as an incident commander or implementing prescribed burn plans. OR One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture); OR A combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Selective Placement Factors A minimum 90 days experience performing on-the-line (Primary/Rigorous) wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practices under various conditions. This experience must be documented with specific dates in the online application or resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. FIREFIGHTER RETIREMENT COVERAGE: This is a secondary position covered under the special retirement provisions of 5 USC 8336(c) for the Civil Service Retirement System and of 5 USC 8412(d) for the Federal Employees Retirement System.
