As an Aviculture Care Specialist for San Antonio Zoo, you would be responsible for a unique bird collection consisting of the American southwest's deserts, coastal beaches, the South American rain forest, Asia's jungles, and the African bush. WORK SCHEDULE AND HOURLY RATE

We are a year-round operation; this position requires a flexible schedule to work weekends, holidays, and occasionally after hours for special assignments. The position is 40 hours a week, and the hourly rate for this position is $12.50.

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS AN ACS - AVICULTURE

As an Animal Care Specialist in the Aviculture Department, I will be responsible for all aspects of daily animal care, maintenance of exhibits and plants, data collection, and documents. Knowledge and/or experience with husbandry for a diverse group of bird species is required. The work involves an amount of independent action with less immediate leadership given after expertise is acquired.

You must be fully committed to San Antonio Zoo's mission to create awareness that inspires action to care for the wildlife we steward and the animals we protect. You take pride in knowing your hard work is making a difference in wildlife conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ACS - AVICULTURE
  • For the safety of our animals, team members, and guests, you must be able to work safely around delicate, wild, and dangerous animals.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are preferred.
  • Knowledge of avian behavior and biology is preferred.
  • Ability to handle, examine, and transfer eggs safely.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
  • Associate degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, or related field preferred.
  • One-year zoo-keeping experience preferred.
  • Must work in varying climates and weather conditions (rain, snow, hot, or cold).
