We are seeking a highly motivated Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) professional with experience implementing ES&H requirements and working in a complex technical environment. Assists in the design, development, and implementation of environmental policy and programs for SNL, focusing primarily on hazardous waste management. Evaluates technical aspects and political implications of hazardous waste regulations and determines the best approaches for compliance for a wide variety of waste management operations at Sandia National Labs (SNL). Evaluates waste management practices and identifies improvements that reduce risks, promote consistency in practices, and strengthen compliance. Interfaces with researchers and operations staff, waste management staff, and management to achieve program efficiency and success while meeting regulatory requirements.
On any Given day, you may be asked to:
- Conduct internal assessments to evaluate whether waste management practices meet permit and regulatory requirements.
- Review and analyze regulations, processes, operations, and activities to address new or revised environmental regulatory impacts.
- Develop corporate policies and guidance to implement waste management requirements.
- Develop approaches to enhance compliance with environmental regulations.
- Manage the interfaces between regulatory inspections, permitting, notices of violation, corrective action planning, and root cause analyses.
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline or ES&H, plus at least (5) years of relevant experience; or master's degree in relevant discipline plus at least (2) years' experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Desired:
- Thorough knowledge of federal and state hazardous waste management laws (e.g., the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act [RCRA]) and implementing regulations
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Experience and applied technical knowledge in hazardous waste compliance.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate options and recommend solutions that address environmental problems or risks.
- Demonstrated strong customer service skills and ability to interact and collaborate with diverse personnel.
- Working knowledge of SNL/NM waste management requirements and operations.
- Active DOE L or Q-level security clearance
- Willingness to take initiative.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently.
- Experience with other environmental laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to perform environmental assessments and audits.

The Environmental Compliance and Monitoring Department collects environmental data to ensure regulatory compliance, monitors Sandia's potential environmental impact, and assists organizations in maintaining compliance and minimizing potential impacts of their work activities.

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
