CAREER OPPORTUNITY
The Regional Manager for State Government Relations is an experienced government relations and public policy professional who has a passion for developing and executing strategies to achieve legislative and regulatory policy outcomes that support the business objectives of a fast-paced, growing, international packaging solutions company.
The Regional Manager will be responsible for analyzing and advocating for state and local legislation, regulation and other public policy initiatives impacting the company. The company's public policy agenda primarily includes energy, environment, forestry, tax, transportation, and labor issues.
The Regional Manager will be assisted by three regional managers and outside consultants. This position will report to the company's Director of Government Relations and is based in Tacoma, Washington.
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT WESTROCK
- Serve as company's primary representative to state and local government officials in Washington, California and Oregon
- Monitor company's legislative and regulatory interests in Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah
- Develop, implement and manage government relations strategy and legislative agenda, including tracking, analyzing and drafting legislation and direct lobbying
- Establish and cultivate relationships with elected officials, community leaders, industry allies, business unit leaders, and relevant civic organizations
- Guide policy positions through involvement with industry associations and special interest groups
- Partner with company business units to formulate and implement successful legislative, regulatory, and community-based strategies to achieve company objectives
- Generate issue one-pagers, talking points, and other relevant materials
- Facilitate and lead facility tours for public officials
- Secure grants, tax credits and other economic development incentives
- Recommend and oversee political contributions to candidates and associations aligned with business interests
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
The candidate will have substantial experience in:
- Government relations and policy analysis
- Strong project and organizational management capabilities
- Coalition building and relationship management
- Economic development incentives
- Managing trade association memberships and engagement
- Strategic planning
The candidate also must have:
- The ability to work well with a team in a fast-paced environment
- The capability to meet strict deadlines while managing multiple priorities
- The ability to travel regularly to manage state responsibilities
- Exceptional listening, verbal, written and presentation skills
- The capacity to think strategically, creatively, and proactively
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Exemplary customer service mindset
Experience:
- Minimum Undergraduate Degree
- Advanced Degree preferred
- 6 or more years of previous state government relations experience or similar
