The department contains six divisions: Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Environmental Genetics and Molecular Toxicology, Environmental and Industrial Hygiene, Epidemiology, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Public Health Sciences, and is a basic science leader within the College, Health System, and nation. Known for its broad and thriving research portfolio, the Department has nationally and internationally recognized educational programs, offering graduate, master's, doctoral, continuing education-and now undergraduate-degrees. Investigators across the divisions have extensive support from the National Institutes of Health as well as other extramural sources and donors. The department's education programs are innovative with strong teaching programs in toxicology, epidemiology, biostatistics and bioinformatics, industrial hygiene and ergonomics, and public health.
Reporting to the Dean of the College of Medicine, the Chair will shape a culture of inclusion, collaboration, transparency, and shared purpose both within the department and with the College and health system. The Chair will have an inclusive and equitable style of leadership and focus on sustaining the excellence of the department through a continued commitment to the highest standards in quality of research, educational outcomes, patient impact, and financial stewardship. S/he is responsible for recruitment, development, and retention of an excellent, diverse faculty. The Chair will foster opportunities to expand research across divisions, with a focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative team-based scholarship. S/he will champion the work of the Department by promoting partnerships across the College of Medicine, with other divisions and departments, UC Health, community partners, and other external stakeholders. The Chair will elevate the department in all its missions to true distinctiveness.
The COM seeks an outstanding PhD, MD, or MD/PhD investigator with substantial leadership experience, a record of innovative extramurally funded research in environmental and/or public health science, and the ability to sustain partnerships that advance the academic, research, and clinical missions of the Department. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader who understands current trends in environmental health sciences and public health sciences, wants to make an impact with innovative research, and values the collaborations and resources which academic medical institutions promote. It is of the utmost importance that the Chair supports these missions as a visible, democratic, and collaborative leader who stands as an advocate for patients, learners, staff, and faculty members within the Department, College of Medicine, and University as a whole.
