Ph.D. in Biological Sciences. Prefer broad training in biology, with preference in botany, genetics, or molecular biology. A strong interest in teaching excellence. Experience in university leadership and administration at the department level or higher.

Preferred Primary Responsibilities

Teach 8-9 semester credit hours per semester, in addition to Chair duties. Courses can include, but not be limited to, General Botany, Biology for Majors I, Cell Biology, Genetics, and advanced courses in their specialty. Delivery of courses will be through face to face as well as distance education and web-format. Candidates are encouraged to establish an externally funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, as well as participate in professional development, and university and community service.

The Department Chair serves as mentor to faculty, colleagues and students, as well as a collaborator with other college administrative officers. The Department Chair interprets university policy, advocates for their department from the perspective of the best overall interests of the university, leads faculty in important processes that shape the curriculum and have an impact on the learning of students, and effectively articulates department and university missions to internal and external constituencies. Chairs evaluate the job performance of faculty and staff, approve recommendations for all faculty and staff appointments, re-appointments, and promotions; leaves of absence; travel authorizations, and other relevant department personnel functions. The Chair should be receptive to questions, complaints, grievances and suggestions from the members of the department, both academic and staff personnel, and from students. The Chair has the responsibility to take appropriate actions as required and in accordance with the policies and rules of the university. The Chair is responsible for working with the Dean of the College, Graduate Studies, and Graduate Committees regarding enrollment, curriculum planning and development, hiring professionals, and establishing or coordinating with external programs. The Chair is responsible for implementing College policy and rules within the department. The Chair is responsible for preparing and proposing budget requests, establishing expenditure priorities, and fairly and equitably administering the department budget, subject to the policies established by the dean and the university.

Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times. Position is security sensitive.

Other Information

Nine month tenure-track position.

Salary: $65,000 (with Ph.D.); Applications to be reviewed upon receipt.

About SRSU

The Department of Biology, Geology, and Physical Sciences offers BS and MS degrees in biology, chemistry, and geology. The graduate programs in biology and geology enrolls approximately thirty students, primarily thesis seeking.
