We are seeking a Biologist II . This position is located in Columbus, OH .
JOB SUMMARY
This role will support Battelle's Nonviral Gene Delivery program. This group is made up of accomplished researchers in Medical Device Solutions, Advanced Materials and Biotech Solutions groups.
The selected candidate will participate in multidiscipline teams that we form around each project and dedicate to achieving that project's goal. Our team-based approach means you will work side-by-side with Biomedical Engineers, Molecular Biologists, Material Scientists, Data Scientists and any other disciplines needed for each project. Your coworkers will range from other co-ops and new graduates to those with 30+ years of experience. The unique backgrounds and work experiences brought by each team member lends diversity to the development process, which results in both product innovation as well as an engaging work environment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The selected candidate will work in a small, fast-moving team collaborating with laboratory and data scientists to carry out laboratory tasks and deliver cutting-edge research and products to our customers.
- Prepare cell cultures, including cell propagation, maintenance, and transfection/infection
- Perform fluorescent staining and microscopy, including cell preparation and imaging
- Carry out tasks common in a molecular / cell biology laboratory such as but not limited to:
- plasmid propagation in microbial cells
- extracting the DNA/RNA for transfection
- routine PCR including qRT-PCR
- Gel electrophoresis
- DNA sequencing and library preparation
- Genetic construct assembly
- Assist with pre-clinical animal studies
- Support team members in design, synthesis, characterization, analysis, and knowledge management of drug delivery vehicles, including polymer nanoparticle.
- Capturing and organizing data using spreadsheets and other database tools
- Analyzing laboratory data using spreadsheets, analytics, graphing, bioinformatic, and molecular modeling tools
- Ensuring effective and frequent communications with senior project leadership
- Capturing and reporting technical progress in technical reports, briefings, and peer-reviewed articles for presentation to management and clients
- Supporting the team in developing new, enabling capabilities and in proposal/grant writing
- Some additional facets of product development such as concept generation, design and prototyping may be possible pending project workload and candidate's abilities.
THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED
- PhD degree in biology, including cellular, molecular, evolutionary or related field OR Master's degree
- Experience with PCR/qPCR
- Experience working with both DNA and RNA sample types and related extraction protocols for sample types ranging from environmental to human clinical
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and proven ability to work collaboratively with development teams to ensure development cycles are maintained
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Familiarity with basic descriptive and inferential statistics.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Proven ability to successfully work independently or as part of a larger team.
- Passion for learning new skills.
- Must be a US Citizen
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED
- Two plus years of related experience.
- In addition to a strong engineering or science curriculum, education or experience in cell and gene therapy, including CRISPR technologies.
- Experience with transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
- Background in cancer or rare diseases
