Job Description
The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and its Maryland based Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) seek one or more Post Doctoral Research Associates to conduct research on clean energy policies with a major focus on energy system transitions and climate change, including end-use and supply side sectoral policies in the context of deep decarbonization strategies and their implementation. The assignment location is at the JGCRI in College Park, Maryland. The anticipated tasks will include:
- Contributing to clean energy policy research, modeling and analysis including publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific and technical conferences; presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
- Multi-scale modeling using Earth-human systems models, including development of new capabilities, analysis of energy efficiency and emission mitigation policies; and the use of these models/methods for scientific inquiry and decision research;
- Close collaboration with interdisciplinary scientists at JGCRI/PNNL, other collaborating research institutions, and sponsoring agencies and other decision makers (e.g., US EPA, US DOE, and White House);
- It is anticipated that the successful candidate will work on multiple projects with varying needs and tasks, including policy analysis and work with the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM).
Term Length
This is a two year position with the potential of extension to a third year based on performance.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD Degree in Public Policy, Engineering, Economics, Physical Science, or related field
- Experience with Earth-human system and energy-economic models
- Knowledge of end-use and supply-side energy systems
- Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of multi-disciplinary science teams
- Ability to drive and take responsibility for projects
- Experience in training and mentoring junior research staff or students
- Foreign language fluency would be a plus (Vietnamese, Thai, Mandarin, Ukrainian and Russian would all be languages of interest).
