JOB SUMMARY
Battelle is seeking a Biologist - Level III to operate on-site in a laboratory setting, supporting mail screening facility laboratory operations for the Department of Homeland Security. This position is based in Washington, DC , with travel approximately 1 week per quarter.
Primary responsibility will be serving as shift lead for a small team conducting hands-on laboratory analysis of samples for select chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) hazards using established methods and processes, and expansion of current testing methodologies.
Other duties include:
- Leading routine functions such as supplying and performing inventory, stocking, material preparation and acceptance testing, process improvement studies and projects
- Attending meetings with government representatives to provide input into CONOPS, process improvements, SOP revisions, etc.
- Assisting the government with initiation and follow-through with facility related issues to include maintenance, work orders, coordination of authorized personnel access
- Completing agency specific required training, including IT training, within expected time frame
The successful candidate will be capable of being fully qualified in all laboratory methods and capable of performing work under an established ISO17025 system prior to reporting any laboratory results, as per applicable lab SOPs.
THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED
- Ability to obtain a Secret-level Security Clearance and DHS Suitability
- Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, or similar field that includes coursework in molecular biology and genetics, microbiology, and/or subjects related to the study of microorganisms, viruses, and toxins
- At least six (6) years of progressively complex experience that includes at least four (4) years of hands-on experience in laboratory analytical support including sample preparations and quantitative analysis of environmental samples for bacteria, viruses and toxins
- Experience must include at least two (2) years of experience in scientific investigation, aspect technique, and contamination control
- Ability to become fully qualified in all laboratory methods and certified of being capable to work under an established ISO17025 system
- Must be US Citizen
THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED
- MS Degree in biology, biochemistry, or similar field
- At least two (2) years of first-line supervisory experience
- Experience in a Select Agent and Toxin BSL-3 environment or a Chemical Agent CSL-3 environment
- Active Secret clearance and ability to obtain a Top-Secret security clearance
- Experience utilizing defensible quality practices, including ISO 17025 or equivalent accredited environment
- Ability to train other personnel to meet fully trained and certified independent analyst requirements
