Performs chemical, microscopic, serologic, hematological, immunohematologic, parasitic and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Collects specimens and performs quality control.
Major Responsibilities
Collects, processes and records specimens for analysis according to protocol and standard precautions
Records date and time of specimen collection, receipt in the laboratory and ordering in the laboratory information system
Gathers lab patient billing information when required
Record and distribute test results
Performs all laboratory testing following departmental procedures and protocols
Performs and records, in the lab information system, appropriate quality control for each procedure
Performs instrument troubleshooting and repairs. Performs equipment maintenance
Assists in development and review of laboratory procedures
Calls critical values and distributes reports properly
Answers queries for results
Monitors and resolves outstanding LIS reports
Collects data and participates in Performance Improvement projects
Participates in Proficiency and Competency Testing
Notifies supervisor of any unusual or unexpected requests, equipment problems or other information
Manages supplies and inventories. Restocks supplies
Maintains a clean safe work environment
May act as resource to MLT, lab assistant and nursing staff
Assists training new employees and students
Education and/or Experience
MLT
National certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) with ASCP, AMT, AAB or equivalent certification required within 6 months of hire
MLT AA required
Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-Phleb.) certification required. Application for MA-Phlebotomist certification must be submitted to DOH within 90 days of hire.
Current BLS certificate required
One year of medical technologist with phlebotomy experience preferred
Three years of experience preferred for MLTs hired for night shift due to working alone
MT
National certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) with ASCP, AMT, AAB or equivalent certification required within 6 months of hire.
Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or in a biological science from a 4-year accredited college or university required.
Washington State Medical Assistant-Phlebotomy (MA-Phleb.) certification required. Application for MA-Phlebotomist certification must be submitted to DOH within 90 days of hire.
Current BLS certificate required.
