Overview:
Performs analysis on laboratory specimens. Demonstrates expertise and responsibility for one or more areas of the laboratory (Microbiology, Sunnybrook Lab, Point of Care, Blood Bank, and CAP Survey readiness). Acts as a primary resource person for that area(s). May instruct students in the Medical technology Program. Maintains records of performance as defined by the Laboratorys administrative and sectional operating procedures. Prepares for the accreditation process. Contributes professional laboratory phlebotomy knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the UnityPoint Focus Values, College of American Pathologist standards, and UPH - St. Lukes Medical Laboratory Procedures and Policies

Responsibilities:
Clinical Excellence / Patient Care Accurately maintains the necessary procedures, documentation, and records to ensure the section of the laboratory is inspection ready to meet CAP guidelines and all applicable standards and regulations including the FDA, AABB, DNV, HCFA, CAP, CLIA, and OSHATakes responsibility to ensure delivery of quality and effective services, implements, maintains, and monitors, programs for quality control, preventative maintenance, proficiency surveys and indicatorsWorks with the pathologists and Laboratory Medical Director to designate, implement and perform staff competency assessmentsImplements, maintains, and monitors programs for quality control, preventive maintenance, proficiency testing and QIF program indicators. Performs similar functions for non-Lab testing personnel doing waived testing. Participates in the interview and employee selection process and completes annual performance reviews for staff as defined by UPH.Orientates new staff to policies, procedures, and instrumentationDemonstrates technical and operational expertiseInterprets quality control results and instrument functionCompletes scheduled preventive maintenance dutiesProvides assistance and guidance involving repairs, validations, and function checksOrganizes, prioritizes, executes and interprets workload. Actively assists coworkers with interpretations and troubleshooting and possible follow-up corrective actionsResource management: Assists and monitors necessary supplies and kit availability for patient testing. Responsible for following manufacturers recommended instructions for utilizing testing material and kits. Assists with reagent orders from vendors.Technical and teaching assistance: Provides operational training for coworkers involving manual, automated, and organizational skills for patient testing. Provides knowledge acquired thru experience and training to assist new hires and current coworkersBe available and help Phlebotomy services draw blood from patients in the Out Patient area located in the laboratory.Targets & achieves results, sets challenging goals, prioritizes tasks, overcomes obstacles, accepts accountability, sets team standards and responsibilities, provides leadership/motivation.Work weekend shifts on a normal rotationPractices good communication skills with internal and external customers.a . Qualifications:
Minimum RequirementsIdentify items that are minimally required to perform the essential functions of this position.Education:Baccalaureate degree with a major in Medical Technology or related scienceExperience:Prefer 2 - 5 years of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiencyPrefer 3-7 years of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.License(s)/Certification(s):Certified as a Medical Technologist by the Board of Registry of ASCP or equivalentKnowledge/Skills/Abilities:Decision making Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.Multicultural sensitivity.Microsoft Office basic computer skills.Customer/patient focused.Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.Other:Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
