Background:
The USGS project work in Afghanistan is multi-dimensional. Several projects examine Afghanistan's mineral resource potential. One project summarizes the mineral resources of areas, which the USGS has previously identified as "Areas of Interest", another project looks at near-term revenue of a number i=of commodities/ore deposits in Afghanistan. Both projects will produce technical reports as one of their final deliverables. These reports will require technical reviews by an Economic Geology expert both in mineral deposits, but also in Afghanistan.
Purpose:
As required, the Economic Geologist will work with USGS technical experts to develop technical reports that document the results of ongoing mineral resource investigations in Afghanistan and previous USGS investigations of Afghan mineral Areas of Interest (AOIs). These reports will require an individual with expertise in field investigations of mineral deposits.
Task Description:
- Support USGS mineral resources investigations in Afghanistan:
- Identify commodity/deposit types for study.
- Prepare and/or write and conduct technical reviews of reports documenting the prioritization of these commodities/deposit types in Afghanistan.
- Organize USGS and Afghan coworkers to develop, assess, and modify investigations of prioritized commodities/deposit types.
- Organize, write and conduct technical reviews of project reports on Afghanistan's mineral resources and mineral resource potential.
- Ongoing evaluations of potential metal resources being conducted by the MOMP.
- Areas that the USGS believes to have exceptional mineral potential, which discuss the geology and types of mineral deposits believed to occur within those areas.
Travel:
Some travel may be required (25%).
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a PhD and advanced experience in economic geology
- Demonstrated expert in mineral deposits and mineral resource assessments
- Demonstrated experiences as a review of technical reports that address mineral deposit and mineral resource issues
- Must have personal experience with Afghanistan and its mineral deposits
- Must understand USGS report writing and technical review standards and procedures
