Field Technician

This position is for Temporary Field Technician in the Henry Mountains desert foothills, for approximately one or more months of work in August and September. It is for a research project focusing on rangeland ecology, specifically, the effects of herbivores on plant communities in rangelands that are heavily managed for livestock production. This work is in collaboration with Utah State University and the Bureau of Land Management.

Primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

• Conduct transect spotlight surveys after dark
• Transect quadrat surveys during the day in order to assess the lagomorph populations in the area
• Careful recording and organization of data on datasheets and/or tablets
• Care and maintenance of field equipment
• Assisting with grazing exclosure inspection and camera rotations
• Sample collections (scat, soil, and plants)

REQUIRED:

• Interest in wildlife ecology, conservation, or related field.
• Enthusiasm for watching cute/cool animals for extended periods at a time.
• Enthusiasm for and ability to hike long days in high heat
• Excellent physical fitness and ability to carry a heavy pack (50 lbs).
• Familiar with navigation by maps, compass, and GPS.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, sometimes in the summer heat and/or
  inclement weather.
• Ability to work well in a small team in remote settings without reliable access to cell
  service (you will not be able to check in frequently, though accommodations will be made daily to do so).
• Organized, detail-oriented, strong work ethic, and evidence of independent problem-
  solving/troubleshooting ability.
• Ability to maintain a positive attitude and a growth mindset about project setbacks
  and/or physical exertion and discomfort.
• Experience in outdoor leadership and/or backcountry travel, including leave-no-trace
  camping ethics.

PREFERRED:

• Completed or near completion of a Bachelor's degree in wildlife ecology or related field.
• Hiking and backpacking experience.
• Experience collecting data.
• Experience identifying Utah desert plant species.
• Knowledge of and experience with wilderness first aid techniques.
• Exceptional listener and communicator who effectively conveys information verbally and in writing.
• Strong organizational skills.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
