Pionyr Immunotherapeutics is a growing, well-funded clinical stage South San Francisco-based immuno-oncology company focused on novel approaches to generate anti-tumor immunity. Pionyr is seeking a highly motivated immunologist or tumor biologist with expertise in myeloid biology. The candidate will be responsible for developing systems to interrogate myeloid cell-mediated regulation of tumor growth and evaluate myeloid-targeting strategies for anti-cancer treatment. The candidate will work closely with colleagues from antibody discovery, target discovery and validation teams, as well as manage external collaborations.

Responsibilities include but not limited to
  • Develop in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo assay systems that interrogate both the function of myeloid cell populations and the activity of Pionyr's therapeutic molecules
  • Use murine tumor models and human tumor samples to understand the role of myeloid cells in sensitivity and resistance to therapeutic agents such as checkpoint inhibitors, chemotherapy, and/or radiotherapy
  • Closely collaborate with project and discovery teams to interrogate the mechanism-of-action of candidate antibodies targeting distinct myeloid subpopulations
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff members
  • Manage vendor and collaboration relationships
  • Contribute to Pionyr's research strategy by helping to expand the approaches used to target myeloid subpopulations within the tumor microenvironment
  • Support biomarker discovery efforts, including patient selection and stratification

Requirements
  • PhD with at least 8 years of relevant research experience, preferably with 2-3 years of experience in an industry setting
  • Strong working knowledge of immuno-oncology and/or inflammation with emphasis on myeloid cells
  • Extensive knowledge of assays and systems for the interrogation of mouse and human immune cell function
  • Demonstrated experience with immune assays, including extensive experience with high-dimensional flow cytometry (14+ parameter) analysis of immune populations from blood, primary and secondary lymphoid tissues, and tumors
  • Experience planning, managing or conducting in vivo mouse syngeneic tumor studies (efficacy, pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic)
  • Expertise in myeloid biology as evidenced by authorship on high impact publications and patents
  • Experience with outsourcing and tech transfer of assays to third parties and CROs
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, cross-functional organization where collaboration is highly valued
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and support career development of junior laboratory staf
  • Experience leading early drug development teams is a plus
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills to empower teams and leverage strengths
  • Effective management of CROs and external partner collaborations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation, organization, and synthesis of large amounts of data for presentation to internal and external audiences
