We are seeking an experienced individual to work as a Scientist at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES. The contractor shall:

* Perform all research and related tasks in a meticulous manner, with scientific integrity, and including appropriate experimental controls, and following pre-approved experimental protocol(s).

* Perform tasks in a team-setting and/or individual setting, depending on project-specific needs.

* Design and perform *polymerase chain reaction **(*PCR) based assays and perform gel electrophoresis of PCR products.

* Perform Sanger sequencing, sequence analysis, variant calling, and variant annotation in accordance with Human Genome Variation Society (HGVS) nomenclature.

* Perform in silico predictions of sequence-variant function using tools that include PolyPhen-2, SIFT, MutationAssessor, PROVEAN, SNAP2, PANTHER-PSEP, and MutPred2.

* Design and generate mammalian expression constructs by site directed mutagenesis and cloning/subcloning.

* Perform large-scale bacterial culture, bacterial transformation, bacterial colony growth and selection on agar plates, plasmid DNA isolation, plasmid DNA purification, and plasmid DNA quantification, and gel electrophoresis.

* Perform mammalian cell culture using sterile techniques and freeze stocks of mammalian cells for long-term storage.

* Maintain and organize liquid nitrogen and freezer inventories.

* Perform cell counts using hemocytometer and automated cell counters including the Countess Automated Cell Counter.

* Use BMG Omega plate reader and Bio-Rad Chemidoc Imager.

* Perform transient and stable transfections of plasmid DNAs into mammalian cell cultures.

* Perform molecular-based and cell-based assays including migration assays, viability assays, proliferation assays, wound-healing assays, kinase assays, siRNA/shRNA depletion, and in vitro ubiquitination assays.

* Perform protein and nucleic acid isolation and purification from mammalian cell cultures.

* Perform microdissection of fresh-frozen and/or paraffin-embedded human tissues and subsequent protein and nucleic acid extraction, purification, and quantification.

* Perform sequence alignments and sequence format conversions using bioinformatics tools including Clustal Omega, BLAST, and EMBOSS Seqret.

* Perform Bradford assays, Western blotting and immunoprecipitation.

* Develop X-ray films after exposure to Western blots.

* Scan Western blots and perform densitometry, data quantification, and normalization.

* Perform and/or assist in highly accurate analysis of large-scale datasets.

* Perform hierarchical clustering using Partek® Genomics Suite®.

* Annotate gene and/or protein datasets using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, g:Profiler, and/or DAVID.

* Collect, analyze and interpret data for all experiments performed.

* Search, retrieve and analyze publicly available data within the cBIOPortal for Cancer Genomics, COSMIC, dbSNP, dbVar, ClinVar, ExAC, The Human Protein Atlas, Ensembl, NCBI databases, DepMap, CCLE, GDSC, DGIdb, UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot, and other online databases related to cancer, genomics, and proteomics.

* Perform PubMed and PubMed Central searches and other online searches to identify, read and assimilate scientific and biomedical literature relevant to projects; maintain a personal database of literature in EndNote.

* Make detailed and comprehensive records daily in laboratory notebook, to document: experimental purpose, results and interpretation thereof, and conclusions. Laboratory notebook must adhere to NIH policies and lab-specific policies and will be reviewed on a regular basis by the principal investigator.

* Attend and present research updates at weekly laboratory meetings, and on-on-one meetings with the Principal Investigator, for group and individual discussion.

* Present research data at internal and/or external venues, on an occasional basis.

* Observe all institutional policies, safety standards, and completion of appropriate training courses.

* Attend weekly institutional research seminars, following prior approval by the Principal Investigator.

* Assist in maintaining internal laboratory databases as appropriate.

* Assist with manuscript preparation including preparation of data, tables, and figures.

* Attend monthly laboratory manager meetings; disseminate relevant information back to Bell laboratory for discussion and/or implementation.

* Perform weekly flushes of eye-wash stations at sink(s) and enter into log.

* Keep first-aid box fully stocked with in-date items.

* Prepare desk space, bench space, on-boarding documents, and prepare order documentation for supplies for new lab members in advance of on-boarding.

* Assist in management and update of lab-owned property in the property management portal; identify misassigned property and facilitate assignment corrections.

* Submit facilities management maintenance request tickets and coordinate repair responses.

* Facilitate the surplus of outdated or excess property.

* Assess levels of reagents and supplies within the main laboratory and storage areas and communicate with other lab members regarding their upcoming needs; assist with obtaining quotes, and process replacement orders from external vendors to maintain appropriate inventories of critical reagents and supplies.

* Obtain supplies from the NIH supply store.

* Assist with preparation and tracking of documentation for procurement of cell lines from international sources.

* Assist with preparation and tracking of documentation for procurement of orders through the NIH Consolidated Operations Acquisition Center (COAC).

* Monitor freezers daily for proper temperature control; schedule service and/or repair of freezers that are out of normal temperature range; relocate contents of freezer to another location if freezer temperature is out of range.

* Perform freezer defrosts and organization.

* Respond to laboratory equipment alarms; responses include responding in person to move freezer contents, notifying other lab members of alarm, coordinating responses between lab members during and after an alarm, working to schedule repair of alarming equipment.

* Maintain an updated contact list for Rees alarms including points of contact for individual laboratory equipment as well as shared equipment used by all members of the Branch.

* Monitor preventative maintenance contracts for equipment and schedule service calls and repairs and act as point of contact with service person when this person is on-site.

* Serve as the primary point of contact for the chemical waste program in the laboratory; schedule chemical waste pick-up; ensure compliance with updated NIH waste disposal guidelines.

* Communicate requirements for the NIH Division of Environmental Protection (DEP) annual lab chemical waste management inspection to lab members.

* Schedule, prepare for, and facilitate the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) annual laboratory survey.

* Manage safety training records for the laboratory; notify personnel of upcoming training renewal.

* Facilitate and coordinate lab coat laundry service.

* Maintain equipment, ensuring maintenance agreements are current and appropriate.

* Assist with ordering laboratory supplies; receive and properly store delivered supplies upon delivery; record receiving documents, in order to maintain appropriate inventories while following NHGRI/NIH procurement policies.

* Ship, store, and dispose of biological and hazardous materials according to NIH guidelines and policies.

* Participate in management of inventory of critical reagents and supplies.

* Establish and maintain laboratory protocols, including SOPs.

* Communicate in a timely, effective, and civil manner with NHGRI staff, service providers, and other internal and external personnel/stakeholders.

* Attend seminars presented by postdoctoral trainees interviewing for positions in the laboratory.

* Assist in preparations for participation in annual freezer challenge competition.

* Assist with participation in the annual NIH Green Labs Program and help ensure compliance with green practices year-round.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

* Master's degree in a scientific related field. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a BA/BS degree is equivalent to a Master's degree.

* Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a science related field.

* Scientific rigor and integrity.

* Be proficient in use of Mac platform, and fluent in Microsoft-Word, -Excel, -Powerpoint, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox; ability to use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator is desirable.

* Strong communications skills, both oral and written.

* Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
