Overview
 

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Science Specialist for the Northern Great Plains (NGP), based out of Montana.

 

 

 

The NGP program works to improve the status of the NGP as a fully functioning grassland ecosystem by: 1) sustaining intact grasslands and enhancing biodiversity across the ecoregion; and 2) restoring two flagship species— the Plains bison and the black-footed ferret. The Science Specialist is responsible for providing technical/scientific support in the development and testing of ecological theory and applied conservation with a focus on informing grassland conservation across the NGP program. The Science Specialist will assist with data management, synthesis, and analysis through the development of data products and statistical interpretation of existing and new datasets. The Scientist will disseminate information to NGP staff and partners, build and maintain collaboration with scientific partners, and provide support across all NGP projects as needed.

 



Responsibilities
 

  • Manage ecological monitoring data for grassland restoration and grazing management projects
  • Compile, synthesize, and analyze results to evaluate impacts of management change on ecological function
  • Maintain communications within teams
  • Manage contracts with consultants
  • Stay up to date on rangeland monitoring efforts across the region through research, engagement, and collaboration to help guide collective management towards improved ecological function
  • Track programmatic metrics towards achieving conservation goals
  • Work with all NGP programs to collect data
  • Maintain database, data entry and compile data for reports.
  • Provide data synthesis and interpretation for existing and new datasets to support grassland conservation goals to help answer key science questions as outlined by the Science Lead.
  • Collect and process datasets for use by NGP staff and partners, as needed and in partnership with the Senior Specialist and other team members.
  • Other duties assigned by manager.

 

Qualifications
 

  • Must have at least 4 years of substantial and demonstrated work experience in grassland or rangeland ecology.
  • Must also have at least 2 years of experience in data synthesis and analysis.
  • A bachelor's degree is required in a relevant field such as Ecology, Conservation Biology, Zoology, Natural Resource Management. Advanced degree in a related field of study is a plus and may substitute for some years of experience.
  • Excellent organizational, research and writing, analytical, and project management skills are required.
  • This position also requires the ability to operate with independence, under pressure, and to meet deadlines and commitments.
  • Candidates should have a strong commitment to the mission, goals, and values of WWF, good interpersonal and relationship-building skills, energy and enthusiasm, and high ethical standards.
  • Must be willing to travel as needed for conferences or regional partner meetings.
