HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to support the laboratory of Dr. Kristi Frank located within the Department of Microbiology (MIC) at the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to the Department of Microbiology.

Responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team. The laboratory focuses on the pathogenesis of biofilm-associated infections caused by Enterococcus faecalis. The postdoctoral fellow will support research on molecular characterization of a membrane protease in biofilm formation and interactions with the host immune response. Previous experience in animal surgery is preferred.

  • Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development. (15%)
  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products. (15%)
  • Collects and handles samples and keeps detailed records of experiments. (15%)
  • Assists with the preparation of data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals. (10%)
  • Performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols, which will involve specialized procedures such as DNA cloning and sequencing, protein extraction, Western blotting, RNA purification, quantitative RT-PCR, analysis of high throughput sequencing data, and animal injections. (30%)
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the appropriate scientific areas.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, bacteriology, gene expression, and molecular cloning.
  • Must be able to follow the scientific theory and perform experiments to develop, support, and carry out the laboratory theories with very little oversight and direction.
  • Animal handling experience required.

Minimum Education:
A doctoral degree in Microbiology or related scientific discipline required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:
0-5 years of relevant work experience required.

Work Environment:
Set in a laboratory work environment.

Active US work authorization and eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
