This role supports the new Rapid Diagnostics Solutions (RDS) business unit in San Diego, California, part of the group of diagnostics businesses at Thermo Fisher Scientific. HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT?

Actively participate and support the development of point of care molecular diagnostic kits in a demanding, fast-paced environment. You will work under minimal direction and closely with other scientists to design and develop multiplexed PCR assays for point of care settings.

Additional duties may include device testing, optimization and verification as well as aiding in the QA and QC process. Attention to detail and the ability to write and follow SOPs is critical. Demonstrated biochemistry and molecular biology expertise and experience with PCR, multiplexed and Real Time-PCR technology leveraging all appropriate methodologies to test a hypothesis and ensure use of relevant experimental controls. Experience working with infectious agents in a BSL-2 environment is a must.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

* Will apply technical knowledge to develop and bring to market CLIA-waved diagnostic kits

* Develop a hypothesis and then design the necessary set of experiments to test the hypothesis with limited guidance

* Analyze the data derived and explain the outcome of their experiments

* Maintain accurate and detailed lab notebooks and appropriate documentation based on the scientific method enabling other scientists to reproduce their experiments

* Support verification and validation studies as well as clinical trials

* May assist in preparing material for regulatory filings, manuals, articles for the newsletter, patents or scientific publications

* Prepares regular reports documenting procedures and experimental results

* Presents research data and conclusions in 10-30 minute sessions

* Ability to read a scientific paper, reproduce the experiments described and understand the conclusions

* Ability to read patents and understand details of invention and claims

* Complete lab compliance activities

HOW WILL YOU GET HERE?

EDUCATION

* PhD in Molecular Biology, Biology or Biochemistry with 2+ years of in vitro industry experience in product development, or B.S. degree in with a minimum of 6 years relevant industry experience

* Proven experience developing RT-PCR based in vitro diagnostic assays from concept through technical transfer and commercial launch

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

* Hands-on experience in PCR assay development and optimization

* Experience with handling BSL-2 pathogens

* Experience in clinical validation

* Experience in primer and DNA sequence analysis

* Demonstrate team working competencies and ability to perform the project tasks to meet product development and validation schedules

* Attention to detail

* Ability to read, write and speak English

* Ability to execute under pressure with short turnaround times

* Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
