The mission of Argonne's Environmental Science Division (EVS) is to provide pioneering fundamental and multidisciplinary research and innovative analyses to solve global and local challenges, applying our core competency in predictive environmental understanding. Argonne is home to a wide variety of computing systems, including some of the most powerful high-performance computers in the world. These systems provide computing power to advance understanding in a broad range of disciplines.
The EVS division seeks a post-doctoral appointee to develop and apply economic models, both analytical and numerical, on problems related to ecosystem services, climate change, agricultural systems, and energy-environment interactions. Apply innovative modeling systems, including input-output schemes, to assess natural resource economic issues at the watershed, state, and regional scales. Work closely with ecologists and physical scientists in a multidisciplinary environment. Produce technical reports, publish findings and results in peer-reviewed journals, make presentations at professional conferences, and support program development activities such as proposal writing, workshops, and mentoring interns.
- This position requires a recent Ph.D. in natural resources economics, environmental economics, or agricultural economics, or similar degrees.
- Experience in developing and applying analytical and numerical methods, including dynamic optimization computations to natural resource systems.
- Knowledge of ecological and agricultural systems and ecosystem services as these relate to economic conditions and sustainability; understanding of climate issues and adaptations to climate change; and knowledge of economic considerations in land use planning activities.
- Skill in applying innovative modeling systems, including input-output methods to investigate regional and state natural resource economic issues.
- Knowledge of natural resource economic theory and applied regional analysis.
- Interpersonal and communication skills required to interact effectively, tactfully and discreetly with all internal/external contacts and to develop effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of macroeconomics (growth and development).
- Ability to interact effectively with scientific and engineering professionals in a team setting.
- Ability to meet project deadlines and stay within budgetary limits.
- Demonstrated success in working on several projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrate excellent career growth potential, including proposal development.
- Ability to model Argonne's Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
Knowledge and experience in one of the following areas are desirable, but not required:
- Techno-economic analyses, geographic information systems and remote sensing for agricultural and environmental applications, and data analytics software such as Python or R.
